The 2021 Colorado Rockies started their spring training with highs and lows. The Rockies won their first game against the Diamondbacks 5-2 coming back from two down in the third. On Monday, they faced Trevor Bauer and lost 10-0. A lot has happened in the last two days but overall this team has some hidden gems that we may see more of this season.
2021 Colorado Rockies: Arizona Diamondbacks
The Rockies" first game was against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rockies had five runs on 11 hits with one error. The Diamondbacks had two runs on four hits and zero errors.
For the Rockies pitching, it went pretty well. Austin Gomber made his first Rockies start going two innings with one hit and a strikeout. Chi Chi Gonzalez on the other hand had some struggles on the mound. Gonzalez pitched an inning but gave up three hits with two runs, one coming off a home run. Phillip Diehl got the win when he came in the fifth.
The Rockies had some good offense for the first game of spring training. As a total, the Rockies had 11 hits in 34 at-bats. They also had five runs, five walks, and 25 left on base. The best individual performances were from Josh Fuentes who went 2-for-2 with one run. Garrett Hampson also went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Alan Trejo went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk in the win.
Overall, it was a good start for the Rockies. It was nice to see a little bit of Gomber, and to get some young guns in that were hitting well. The win is nice too, but the overall experience and evaluating the young talent is what spring training is about.
2021 Colorado Rockies: Dodgers Match-Up
The other game that the Rockies played was against the Dodgers on Monday. This game was the exact opposite of the game on Sunday for the Rockies. Even in the 10-0 loss, there was some good that came from the game. Trevor Bauer started his first game as a Dodger.
Jameson Hannah has been playing very well the last two games. He had two diving catches against the Dodgers and went 1-for-2 with an RBI on Sunday. The former second-rounder that got traded to the Rockies in the Jeff Hoffman trade. He is one of the players that we will have to keep an eye out for the rest of spring training.
The Rockies didn"t have good pitching or hitting in the game against the Dodgers. They only got two hits and an error on defense. Hampson had a hit in the first inning and Connor Joe had the other one. Not the best day for the Rockies but a lot of minor leaguers played in the game, so it was a good experience for the young guys.
Pitching was also a struggle. Dereck Rodriguez had the start for the Rockies and had a rocky start. In two innings he gave up four hits and two earned runs. The other pitcher that had some struggle was Brian Gonzalez. Gonzalez had six hits with three earned runs and two strikeouts. The worst thing about Gonzalez"s appearance was that he did all of that in only .2 innings. Again, these are young players and they are getting good competition that will make them better in the future.
2021 Colorado Rockies: Week Preview
The Rockies have gotten a taste of spring training and now they have a long week ahead of them. They have five more games this week against the A"s, Mariners, Brewers, Angels, and the White Sox. It will be nice to see more starters in and slowly see what this club can offer. Until then, we can see some young guys step in and see which players can make a difference in the 2021 Colorado Rockies.
