According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Blake Griffin is expected to sign with the Brooklyn Nets after he recently had his contract bought out by the Detroit Pistons.

The thirty-one year old power forward has not played since a February 14 win over the Pelicans, and the team was 2-7 after he sat out. What’s the Blake Griffin potential impact?

The addition of Blake Griffin, a six time all-star, now gives Brooklyn five players who have qualified for an all-star team, with Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden

Griffin will join the Nets as they have gone 9-1 in their last ten games. In that stretch, Harden and Irving have led the team without Kevin Durant (hamstring).

Blake Griffin’s history

Blake Griffin had a spectacular year recently, as the 2018-19 NBA season, where he averaged 24.5 points on 46.2% shooting, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game in his first full season with the Pistons in 2018-19. But Griffin has played in just 38 games over the last two seasons due to a series of injuries, averaging 13.9 points per game across the two seasons combined.

This season, Griffin has averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 20 games. He was traded to Detroit in 2018 which was about six months after he signed a five-year, $171 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Blake Griffin Potential Impact

The Nets have needed a power forward this whole season as a reliable option to backup or replace Jeff Green, and Blake Griffin definitely can be that option at the power forward spot. Griffin could also be a small ball option at the center position.

Even though he does not provide the highlight plays and the alley-oops due to his recent string of injuries, Griffin has shown his ability to be a reliable scorer as a member of the Pistons, foreshadowing his fit in a historically great Brooklyn offense.

Overall, this is a productive and low-risk move by the Nets regarding the Blake Griffin potential impact. The worst case-scenario being that Joseph Tsai loses some cash on the signing. It might be challenging at first to integrate a fifth all-star into the offense, but Blake will have to fill his role and contribute towards the Nets 2021 championship run
