Donald Cerrone vs Diego Sanchez Set for UFC Fight Night

Two former training partners have agreed to a bout that will take place at a UFC Fight Night event on the 8th of May. This bout will see Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone take on The Ultimate Fighter 1 winner Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez. The bout was first reported by MMA Fighting.

Cerrone vs Sanchez added to UFC Fight Night in May

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (36-15-2 NC, 23-12-1 UFC) fights out of BMF Ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cerrone is currently coming off a no-contest result against Niko Price. However, prior to this result Cerrone was experiencing a four-fight losing streak that included losses against Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor and Anthony Pettis. A win for Cerrone is essential considering the recent releases of Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos. Therefore, Cerrone will be aiming to end his current form and ensure his future in the UFC, by getting a win against his former training partner Diego Sanchez.

Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez (30-13, 19-13 UFC) fights out of Albuquerque, New Mexico with no affiliation to a particular gym. Sanchez is currently coming off a unanimous decision loss to Jake Matthews. However, for Sanchez this upcoming fight against Donald Cerrone will be the last of his career. This comes after Sanchez tweeted “it’s my last fight my heart path has changed, it’s time to to heal not hurt”. Therefore, Sanchez will be aiming to go into the sunset with one final victory over a fan favourite in Donald Cerrone.

This fight is scheduled to take place at Welterweight. A division that Cerrone was looking to stop competing at and return too lightweight but, speaking on his YouTube channel he explained that “everyone was booked up at lightweight”. This meant that the UFC went ahead and worked on putting together the longest-tenured fighter currently in the UFC, against the man with the most wins and finishes in UFC history. The real winners of this fight are fight fans because we are guaranteed fireworks when Diego Sanchez and Donald Cerrone touch gloves on the 8th of May.

Both Sanchez and Cerrone are future Hall of Famers. With Sanchez already being inducted into the “fight wing” for his legendary fight with Clay Guida. However, Sanchez will be aiming to be inducted into a wing on his own. With a win over Donald Cerrone adding another prestigious name to a list of noticeable names. On the other hand, Cerrone will be fighting for his job and ensuring he can return to lightweight.

It’s not known where the Donald Cerrone vs Diego Sanchez fight will land on the card but it will certainly be one to watch! The full line-up and location of UFC Fight Night have yet to be announced. However, the fights announced for May 8th as of yet include:
