Marvin Jones Jr. has been a staple in the Detroit Lions offense over their last five seasons. Jones Jr still is a very productive player and will be a very nice addition to whichever team is lucky enough to sign him during the 2021 NFL free agency. He has lost a step on his speed over the years but is a fantastic catch-in traffic guy so he will still be able to make a difference in a game.
Last season with the Lions Jones Jr. caught 76 passes for 978 yards and nine touchdowns. As the number three option in the offense behind Kenny Golladay and TJ Hockenson, Jones Jr. took over for Golladay as the Lions lead receiver when he went down with an injury. This allowed teams to focus more on Jones. However, he still produced solid numbers during the 2020 season.
He stated in interviews that he wants to go to a team that is in win-now mode, also a team that will pay him what he is worth. With the league salary cap going down and many teams not having a lot of cap space, there are only a handful of teams that fit that criteria. Let’s take a look at the top four teams that meet those goals.
2021 NFL Free Agency: 4 Likely Destinations for Marvin Jones Jr.
Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are by far the favorites to sign Jones Jr and there is not a close second team in my opinion. Jones Jr. wants a win-now team and the Rams just traded their next two years of first-round picks to the Detroit Lions in exchange for quarterback Matthew Stafford which is a big win-now move. Also for obvious reasons Jones Jr would love to continue to catch passes from Stafford and continue their careers together. The Jones family and Stafford families are very close off the field as well.
The Rams could use Jones as a solid outside target. Especially if he has his former quarterback. Additionally, Los Angeles is obviously pushing for a deep playoff run, and I can see Jones Jr. taking a pay cut in this situation for a year or two to try and get a ring. Look for the Rams to make Jones an offer during the 2021 NFL Free Agency.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles are a little cash-strapped, but next to the Lions, they may be the most receiver needy team in the NFL. The need for the Eagles is a bigger deal than the fit for Jones Jr. With the Eagles being desperate for someone that can take over a game, the front office may give Jones Jr. an offer he can’t refuse in the 2021 NFL free agency.
Detroit Lions
The Lions are a candidate to bring Jones Jr. back, however, this is unlikely. Jones Jr. has no ties to the current staff and with Detroit rebuilding, the Lions do not have the cap space to give him the big contract he is looking for in the 2021 NFL free agency. However, he has said several times he loves the city, and his wife owns a bakery shop in Troy. They have roots in Detroit and that may or may not mean something for the veteran receiver.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jackson Jaguars have a ton of cap space, a new coach, a need at the position, and most likely a great quarterback after taking Trevor Lawrence in the draft. That’s all before saying that the Jaguars also hired Marvin Jones Jr.’s former offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell. Between the quarterback, his former coach, and their money, the Jaguars make a very strong case for signing the former Lions receiver in the 2021 NFL free agency.
