UFC Vegas 22 adds Montserrat Ruiz vs Cheyanne Buys to an already amazing card after another intense weekend of UFC fights has passed. After two weeks of illegal knees, eye pokes, and the perplexed state of the welterweight division, the UFC serves a delight yet again.

UFC Vegas 22 features the main event between Derek Brunson and Kevin Holland in a mouthwatering middleweight matchup that’s bound to have reverberations around the division. The card will see married couple Cheyanne and JP Buys make their UFC debuts.

The fight at focus here is the women’s strawweight bout of Montserrat Ruiz vs Cheyanne Buys. Buys (5-1-0) is from St. Petersburg, USA, and makes her UFC debut at UFC Vegas 22. She is currently on a four-fight win streak through multiple organizations, with the most recent victory coming from Dana White’s Contender Series.

Ruiz (9-1-0) also makes her UFC debut at UFC Vegas 22 following an impressive run of victories from Mexico to Invicta FC. Ruiz suffered a decision loss to Danielle Taylor at Invicta FC 33 but aside from that has been near perfect inside the cage. Both women will be looking to impress in their debuts, and no doubt Montserrat Ruiz vs Cheyanne Buys looks to be a tantalizing match-up.

Montserrat Ruiz and Cheyanne Buys both make their debut in a division that is occupied by extremely talented women. UFC Vegas 22 is a stacked card and fight fans are spoiled for choice. Buys is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black belt in Taekwondo. She has extremely swift striking and is able to defend herself on the ground.

She made her professional debut on March 9, 2018, at LFA 35 against Karla Hernandez. She won that fight by elbows in the third round. She then lost her subsequent fight before impressing in a three-fight win streak. This got her a call to feature on Dana White’s Contender Series, which earned her a UFC contract.

Kay Hansen was initially scheduled to face Buys but had to pull out due to undisclosed reasons. This allowed Ruiz to grab her opportunity on the big stage. Montserrat Ruiz and Cheyanne Buys aim to put their names on notice in a division that is so stacked.

Ruiz fights with 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu and it’s not rocket science to figure out that she is completely dangerous on the ground. She has three wins by submission and two by KO from her nine bouts and is a tough challenge to make your debut against.

Ruiz is coming off a win following her first professional career loss and will want to stay on the winning column. She has great technique in her striking, but as mentioned is extremely dangerous on the ground.

No doubt Buys will aim to avoid the fight going to the ground but she isn’t completely out of her depth when it comes to grappling. Coach Richie Quan is a talented coach with incredible knowledge of how to grapple.

Montserrat Ruiz vs Cheyanne Buys Fight Breakdown

Montserrat Ruiz vs Cheyanne Buys has the potential to avoid the judge’s decision and end in a knockout or submission. Both women will be looking to brush off early nerves as they make their debut and seek to dominate in the octagon.

Whoever gets comfortable in the early rounds is more likely to dictate the fight and utilize their cage control to good effect. Buys will seek to use her Taekwondo to good effect, keep Ruiz at distance, and touch her up with strikes. She is efficient in the clinch but will be wary of Ruiz’s takedown attempts.

Ruiz will try to avoid making it a fistfight and seek to assert her dominance in the middle of the octagon. She needs to stay close to Buys to avoid her strikes and keep Buys on the backfoot. Should Ruiz get the takedown, it will be fascinating to see how well Buys is able to defend and whether she will decide to stay there or get back on her feet.

No doubt Buys will also have the support of many of her husband’s compatriots, whilst Ruiz will want to represent Mexico well.
