The Orioles have made some MLB Breaking News with the announcement of the signing of veteran third baseman Maikel Franco. Franco spent the 2020 season with the Kansas City Royals where he hit .278 with 8 home runs.

MLB Breaking News: Maikel Franco Career

Franco started his big league career when he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an international free agent in 2010. Franco quickly rose through the Phillies system and found himself ranked as one of baseball’s top 100 prospects in 2014.

Franco’s Phillies career started on a high note as he hit .280 in his first full season while hitting 25 home runs in the following season. However, Franco would see his batting average drop to the .230s before resurrecting it last season in Kansas City. After a disappointing 2019, the Phillies made their own MLB breaking news when they released their once top prospect.

Maikel Franco Orioles Fit

With the announcement of this MLB breaking news, the Orioles have added a quality power bat while addressing the hot corner. Rio Ruiz held down third last year but struggled to a .222 average and a .286 OBP despite hitting nine home runs. Franco would be penciled into the middle of the lineup while adding some additional pop at the dish.

Signing with Baltimore will also reunite Franco with former Phillies teammate, Freddy Galvis on the left side of the infield. Franco and Galvis were staples in the Phillies infield from 2014-2017 and had natural chemistry in the field.

With this MLB breaking news, the Orioles not only find a solid contributor but an interesting piece in their rebuild. Franco is still only 28 years old and could serve as a mentor for others in the system. Or, the Orioles could look to flip Franco at the deadline to continue building their system.

This move comes across as a win/win as Franco can continue to prove that his 2020 season wasn’t a fluke while the Orioles can get a key piece for their 2021 lineup.
