Anders Lee, the New York Islanders captain will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to fix a lower-body injury. The Islanders will dearly miss their captain for the rest of the season. Lee scored 12 goals and added seven assists in 27 games played before the injury during the 2021 NHL season. He provides great leadership on and off the ice to go along with producing lots of offense for his club. The Islanders will have to rely on some of their rookies to fill the production void left by Lee’s injury.

How does the Anders Lee Injury Affect the Islanders?

The Islanders’ 2009 sixth-round pick has turned out to be a very good player as he has played 520 games in the NHL across nine seasons in the league. In his nine-year career, he has compiled 184 goals and 136 assists for 320 career points. The New York Islanders will miss his offensive production and the leadership he brings to the team.

Normally the Islander captain plays alongside Mat Barzal and Jordan Eberle on the first line. He and his linemate were producing at an unreal rate as he had 12 goals and seven assists on the season. With 19 total points, he is still tied for second on the team in points with Eberle. He only trials linemate Mat Barzal. After signing a large deal in the offseason Barzal will have to adapt as he won’t have Anders Lee accompanying him for the rest of his season.

Without Lee, the Islanders will be missing a lot of leadership as well as his offensive production. As the captain of the Islanders, Lee has led by example and he should be a person for all Islanders players to look up to and strive to exemplify some of the same characteristics.

How do the New York Islanders Replace Anders Lee?

With the emergence of Oliver Wahlstrom and Kieffer Bellows, the Islanders will lean on those two rookies to try and replace the offensive production that he brought. This season Walhstrom has played in 23 games and scored six goals to go along with five assists. Bellows is another former first-round pick of the Islanders that has been very good in his early career. This season Bellows has emerged as a viable option to replace Anders Lee on the first line. This season he has scored three goals in 11 games.

As for the leadership responsibilities that are left by Anders Lee, Andy Greene will most likely take most of those responsibilities on. The 15-year veteran and former New Jersey Devils captain has played nearly 1000 games so he definitely knows how to lead by example and will be a key figure to help motivate the team to keep up their winning ways and stay around the top of the league.

Final Thoughts on the Anders Lee Injury

Without Lee being able to suit up for the Islanders for the rest of the season the team will be missing their captain and their best left-winger. Wahlstrom and Bellows should be tasked with trying to produce at a similar level to what Lee had been producing at. As for the leadership, Greene is the former captain of the Devils and should take on a bulk of the leadership responsibilities. All in all Anders Lee was be missed dearly by his teammates, coaches, and fans. Hopefully Lee and be back on the ice and helping the Islanders sooner than expected.
