In this edition of Cheap Seats Chatter, the crew of Alex, Joe, and MAK gave their season predictions for each division and the World Series. For most of these picks, the crew agreed on a division winner, though there were some hot takes sprinkled in.
Cheap Seats Chatter: Season Predictions
The AL East is slated to be an extremely competitive division. The crew unanimously picked the Yankees to take home the division crown, but the only team the group agreed to write off was the Orioles. Baltimore is a young and improving team, but they don’t really stand a chance in a tough division.
The Red Sox are a team that could surprise people as they have done in the past, but the crew agreed that it’s tough to envision them making the postseason. The Rays and Blue Jays will likely battle for second place, as both have young and talented rosters. The Rays have lost pieces, but still, they have plenty of talent on their roster. The crew all explained that there is a very real possibility that the AL East sends three teams to the postseason.
The AL Central isn’t a very strong division. The crew disagreed on the winner of this division, with Alex taking the White Sox while Joe and MAK taking the Twins. The White Sox may have been more active this offseason, but they made an iffy decision to hire Tony La Russa as their manager. With an old school manager coaching a very young team, the White Sox could run into some problems. Joe even put the Royals ahead of the White Sox, citing Kansas City’s strong offseason.
The AL West is also a pretty weak division, and again there was a disagreement on a winner. Alex and MAK both picked the Astros, while Joe gave his hot take that the Angels would win the division. The only team completely written off was the Rangers, who are likely to finish in last place again. The A’s took home the crown last year, but after losing Liam Hendriks and Marcus Semien, the team looks a little weaker than they did a year ago. The Astros also lost a key piece in George Springer, but they have enough talent where they could win the division.
The NL East is expected to be one of the most exciting divisions in MLB this year. The Mets were the unanimous pick in the division, but the crew admitted that the Braves would keep the Mets honest. Both teams were extremely active this offseason, adding to their already talented rosters. The Nationals and Phillies also had somewhat active offseasons, but in a competitive division, neither team stands much of a chance at the playoffs. The Marlins are expected to come down to Earth in 2021, but they aren’t expected to do super poorly.
The NL Central is easily the weakest division in baseball. The Pirates are heavily expected to be the doormat for all of MLB, but it’s not as if the rest of the division is much better. The Cardinals and Brewers both added pieces, with St. Louis nabbing the big fish of Nolan Arenado. The Cubs and Reds both lost key pieces, making this division a two-team race. Joe picked the Brewers, while Alex and MAK both picked the Cardinals. The crew agreed that whoever wins this division is likely headed for a first-round playoff exit.
The NL West is going to be extremely top-heavy. Before getting into their picks, the crew ripped the Rockies apart for trading Nolan Arenado and $50 million for almost nothing in return. Everyone agreed that the Padres are very likely to make the playoffs, but the Dodgers look like the Golden State Warriors when they had Kevin Durant. The Dodgers may have lost Kiké Hernandez and Joc Pederson, but the team added 2020 NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer to their already stacked rotation. While the Diamondbacks and Giants are both decent teams, they won’t factor much into the division race.
World Series Predictions
The Dodgers are the easy pick to represent the NL, but Joe gave his hot take that the Padres would upset the defending champs. Joe then gave an even hotter take that the Padres would face the Angels in the World Series, with the Friars taking home their first title. MAK and Alex both picked the Blue Jays to represent the AL, but they both picked the Dodgers to win the World Series handily.
