Bad news for MMA fans, Alexander Volkanovski, and Brian Ortega!
First reported on the UFC Vegas 22 broadcast, COVID-19 protocols have caused the featherweight title fight of Volkanovski vs Ortega to be postponed.
This is the second fight tonight announced to be postponed. Earlier today, UFC officials announced that the co-main event of UFC Vegas 22 between Gregor Gillespie and Brad Riddell was postponed also.
The Road to Volkanovski vs Ortega Continues
Alexander Volkanovski (22-1, 9-0 UFC) is on a 19 fight win streak, with his last two fights ending in decision victories over one of the greatest featherweights of all time, Max Holloway. While the last fight with Holloway was very controversial, Volkanoski still came out on top.
Notable wins on his record include victories over the likes of Darren Elkins, Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, and of course, Max Holloway x2.
Alexander Volkanovski also released a full statement regarding the postponement of Volkanovski vs Ortega:
Brian Ortega (15-1-1NC, 7-1-1NC UFC) was riding molten-hot momentum leading into his title-shot against Holloway at UFC 231. Many wondered if Ortega had what it took to dethrone the champ, however, “Blessed” demonstrated his MMA prowess and dominated the young title challenger, finishing Ortega via Doctor Stoppage in round 4.
Continuing on the road to Volkanovski vs Ortega, “T-City” would take two years off after this crushing defeat. He then made a return at UFC Fight Island 6 where he would be taking on a knockout artist known for his ability to wade through damage, Chang Sung Jung aka The Korean Zombie. That fight would spark the creation of another legendary persona that competes with the infamy of “Motivated Mcgregor”. Ortega would fully transform into “Ortega 2.0” that night.
Showing off a whole new and improved striking game that would leave TKZ guessing the entire night, and riding a dominant performance to the scorecards, “Ortega 2.0” would walk away the victor. His return to the competition being a success, “T-City” would end up getting rewarded with a title-shot by Volkanovski for his stellar performance.
What’s your opinion on this Volkanovski vs Ortega postponement? Should the UFC ask more fighters to try and get the vaccine? Or are the guidelines the UFC has in place adequate enough? Leave your opinion down in the comments below!
