The UFC Vegas 22 prelims were very exciting. The five prelim fights were filled with incredible finishes and competitive fights. Three of the victors were able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack with great performances.
Trevin Giles edges out Roman Dolidze
Trevin Giles was able to earn a unanimous decision victory over Roman Dolidze at UFC Vegas 22. Trevin’s speed advantage led to him winning the exchanges on the feet. Trevin also showed great submission defense against a high-level grappler in Dolidze. Giles was able to hurt Dolidze badly in the 3rd round which would eventually seal the win after a close first two rounds. This win extends Giles’ winning streak to three and puts his record at an impressive 14-2. It will be interesting to see who the UFC chooses to match Giles up with next.
Grant Dawson wins in spectacular fashion
Grant Dawson capped off a great performance with an impressive buzzer-beater KO against Leonardo Santos. Dawson shocked the MMA world by landing heavy hammer-fists from the top position that would end up leaving Santos unconscious at the end of the 3rd round. Before the finish, Dawson was able to bank the first two rounds on two of the judges’ scorecards. Dawson adjusted well after Santos denied his early takedown attempts. Dawson showed his ability to adapt when his original game plan was not working.
Eventually, as the fight went on, Dawson was able to takedown a labored Santos and get the finish. I thought that this win would lead to a ranked opponent for Dawson, but he had different plans. Dawson called out Clay Guida in his post-fight interview. The question is if the UFC will look to book that fight or move in a different direction.
Bruno Silva impresses in first UFC victory
Bruno Silva earned a much-needed win in a TKO victory over JP Buys at UFC Vegas 22. Silva showed all aspects of his game in this win. Silva out-grappled Buys for a majority of the first round before capping it off with a spinning back-fist that knocked Buys down at the bell. Silva landed heavy shots on Buys in the 2nd round, knocking him down three times before the ref had to step in and stop the fight.
This win could not have come at a better time for Silva, who was 0-2-1 in his last three fights. Silva will need to gather a few more wins in the UFC before he can be looked at as a contender at flyweight. But he definitely has the tools to make a run in this division. I am excited to see how he performs in his next fight, as he said he is looking to get back into the octagon as soon as possible.
