The Colts Superbowl Window is Now: 5 Reasons They Need to Capitalize

The Indianapolis Colts are one of the NFL’s most interesting teams, as the Colts Superbowl window is currently open. They have an elite defense, a young and upcoming offense, but haven’t made it past the divisional round since 2014. They have had an abundance of cap space over the past few seasons but have refused to use it, and have been one of the best drafting teams in the NFL since Chris Ballard took over.

The Colts do a lot of things well, and they need to take advantage of that success and win it all because it all could come crashing down quickly. The Colts Superbowl window is wide open. But they will need to win one soon before it closes quickly.

While I think the Colts really are contenders there many reasons why they need to win it soon.

5 Reasons the Colts Superbowl Window is Open

1. Great Coaching

The Colts have consistently had some of the best coaching staff in the NFL. Head coach Frank Reich is looked at as one of the NFL’s best head coaches and has also put good coaches around him. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has been one of the most underrated coordinators in the NFL and has consistently gotten the best out of all his players. Offensive coordinator Nick Caserio moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles to be their head coach, but many expect newly hired Marcus Brady to do a great job filling in.

The Colts need to take advantage of these coaches before they move on to bigger and better things. Losing Eberflus could prove to be a huge loss if he were to leave. This team needs to win while they have him. The Colts Superbowl window could be very dependent on the coaching staff.

2. The Team is Cheap for now

The Colts have a boatload of cap space. This is mainly because they have a lot of young players who are still on their rookie deals. This is a team that needs to take advantage of this cap space and cheap young players while they have the chance. The Colts may get themselves into a tough spot when these players’ contracts are up. And it would be advantageous of them to win now before those contracts run out. While they have the money to pay all of their players, they run the risk of losing some key players if they don’t get re-signed. The Colts need to win soon before the team gets expensive.

3. They have Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz is going to be one of the most interesting players in the NFL this season. Wentz was in MVP conversations four short seasons ago and has had three really good seasons in the NFL. But Wentz is coming off his worst statistical season by far and was benched for Jalen Hurts midway through the season. Wentz has proven he is fully capable of winning games and could be the missing piece for the Colts. If this team can get anything close to 2017 Wentz they are in good shape. But they need to capitalize quickly, as Wentz is the ultimate wildcard.

If they get can get good play from their QB, the Colts Superbowl window could stay open longer, but if he plays poorly early, it closes faster. The Colts need to get the best out of Wentz fast, as he could be this missing piece to the puzzle. The Colts need to capitalize on Wentz while they have him because the team is built for success now. If the Colts can’t win with Wentz, they may be running out of good options.

4. The Talent in the AFC

Unfortunately for the Colts, they play in the more competitive conference in the NFL. As they went 10-6 last season and were still only the seventh seed. The Colts Superbowl window would very much depend on how the other teams around them perform. The Kansas City Chiefs are the obvious answer, but several teams are going to be even better next season. The AFC saw eight teams go 10-6 or better last year, and many of those teams are looking even stronger for this season. The Colts are going to need to capitalize soon because the AFC is only getting tougher.

5. The AFC South is Weak

While the rest of the AFC is deep and talented, the AFC south could be a division that struggles. The Jacksonville Jaguars are in a rebuild, the Houston Texans are a mess, and the Tennessee Titans are the only team that could compete with Indy. The Colts will need to take advantage of the weak division while they can. The path to the playoffs for the Colts could be really easy if they can win the games in the AFC South.

The Colts Superbowl window is definitely open, but the Colts need to get one soon because things never get easier in the NFL, and winning is no easy task. Indy is in a great spot and has all the tools to compete, they just need to put them together.
