In this edition of Cheap Seats Chatter, the duo of Alex and MAK discussed their predictions for the Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, and MVP awards. Some of these races had clear favorites, while others are expected to be tightly contested.

Cheap Seats Chatter: Award Picks

Rookie of the Year

In the AL, the popular pick to win this award is Randy Arozarena, however, neither Alex nor MAK picked Arozarena to win. Alex picked Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic, citing how well he’s hit in the minor leagues and Spring Training this year. It is unknown if Kelenic will play in the majors this year though. MAK went with White Sox flamethrower Garrett Crochet, who dazzled in his brief audition in 2020. Crochet lit up the radar gun in six innings pitched, and if he remains in the bullpen could be a valuable player for the South Siders.

On the National League side, the duo went with the more popular picks. Alex predicted that Marlins right Sixto Sanchez would win, while MAK picked Pirates third baseman, Ke’Bryan Hayes. Both of these players received Rookie of the Year votes in 2020, and there are high expectations for them.

Cy Young

In the American League, the Cheap Seats Chatter crew thought this was the toughest prediction to make. Alex went with 2020 winner Shane Bieber, while MAK went with Rays flamethrower Tyler Glasnow. Both pitchers are on the upswing and are primed for big seasons. Alex and MAK also acknowledged that they expect Gerrit Cole and Lucas Giolito to make a run for the award.

In the National League, Alex and MAK both picked Jacob deGrom. They agreed that deGrom is the heavy favorite and remains the best pitcher in MLB heading into the 2021 season.

MVP

The last item discussed on Cheap Seats Chatter was the MVP award. Alex and MAK both picked Mike Trout in the AL and Juan Soto in the NL. Trout is still the best player in baseball and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Soto meanwhile had a monstrous 2020 season and is only getting better as he enters his age-22 season.
