The 2021 Colorado Rockies finished the opening week of the season with a 1-3 record against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even losing the last three games in this series Rockies fans have a lot to look forward to this season.

2021 Colorado Rockies: Highlights

The Rockies had two good starts from their pitchers. German Marquez had a great Opening Day pitching four innings with one earned run. He also had two strikeouts and six hits. The one stat that he needs to work on is his walks, which he ended with six. For the returning champion Dodgers, Marquez did a good job setting the tone on Opening Day and getting the win for the Rockies.

The other pitcher that had a great day was Jon Gray. He went five innings with seven strikeouts and only one earned run. Gray ended the game with a 1.80 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. It was rough to see Gray leave with the trainer because of cramps, but with the outing that he showed, he is easily the second-best pitcher in the rotation.

For the offensive side of the ball, the players that stood out the most were Chris Owings, Trevor Story, and Ryan McMahon. Chris Owings had a perfect 3-for-3 on Opening Day and finished the series with a .400 average, .500 OPB, .700 SLG, and two stolen bases.

Trevor Story also had a good series with a .294 ERA, .294 OBP, .353 SLG, and one RBI. Story hasn’t had any home runs yet, but he has one double. It will be nice to see this streak carry through the Diamondbacks series that starts on the 6th.

Last but not least, Ryan McMahon has been swinging the bat well. He has a .333 average, with one home run, three RBI, a .333 OBP, and .667 SLG.

With two Rockies showing some promise with their two stars, the other two pitchers had some trouble. Antonio Senzatela and Austin Gomber both had rough starts. Senzatela only went 3.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs. He ended the night with an 18.90 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, and two strikeouts. The Rockies tried to come back by having four home runs in one inning, but they couldn’t come back from the 10-0 deficit.

On day four, Austin Gomber got the start for the Rockies. The major problem for Gomber was his walks, which he gave up seven in three innings. He only gave up one earned run and has a 3.00 ERA. The control of Gomber pitches was one thing, but he also underthrew a ball for Story to start a double play. Like Senzatela, this is a day one mistake and he can only get better from here.

Charlie Blackmon has been a star for this team for years. His 2021 season so far hasn’t been the best. He has one home run, but he is only hitting .143, with two RBI, .429 SLG, and .250 OBP. This hasn’t been the best start for Blackmon but he can turn this around in this next series with the Diamondbacks.

The 2021 Colorado Rockies have dropped the last three games with the Dodgers. They won on day one and lost the lead on day three. Day four, they got down 4-0 then came back to end the game 4-2. This team has some fight in them and their bullpen pitching was pretty good. If they can get solid pitching with all of their starters and keep the bats hot, this team could actually surprise some people in 2021.
