Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3 To Headline UFC 264 in July

The historic Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier trilogy fight has been confirmed for UFC 264 in July as the pair collide for a second time in 2021, as first reported by Giorgi Kokiashvili. Scheduled to headline UFC 264, the Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier trilogy is set to take place on July 10th.

The Irishman confirmed the news on his social media, following weeks of rumors regarding when the trilogy fight would take place. McGregor posted the following on his personal Instagram account:

“The fight is booked! July 10th you’re gonna see what the Mac is about. Adjust and absolutely f*cking destroy!” McGregor posted.

Fight Preview

Conor McGregor (22-5, 10-3 UFC) is looking to rebound from defeat once again, having alternated losses in his past three fights. His last win at lightweight was his historic victory against Eddie Alvarez in 2016, which saw him become a double champion in the UFC. He will be looking to avenge defeat for a second time in the organization, having previously done so against Nate Diaz.

Dustin Poirier (27-6, 19-5 UFC) is currently the #1 ranked lightweight in the world. Poirier is currently riding a two-fight win streak following his conquering of McGregor in their rematch in January, and before that, Poirier’s victory against Dan Hooker in June of 2020. “The Diamond” is a former interim UFC lightweight champion, who failed to become the undisputed champion in 2019. Falling to defeat against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov.

How Did We Get To Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3?

The first meeting between the two took place in 2014, early on in both of the fighters’ careers. McGregor stole the limelight in just over 90 seconds, annihilating the Louisiana native just a minute and a half into the first round.

It was not until 2021 that the pair met up for the rematch. This time, Poirier headed into the second fight with some experience against the top dogs of the sport, hungry for redemption.

Approaching the fight, Poirier entered the octagon with a leg kick heavy, counter-punching style. Focused to defeat the stance of McGregor, and work a treat as he slowly picked the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion apart on his way to victory.

He secured his revenge, and the biggest win of his career when he became the first fighter to knockout McGregor, putting away the Irish superstar in the second round.

Poirier was offered the opportunity to fight for the vacant UFC lightweight belt following Nurmagomedov’s retirement. However, the American opted for the money fight instead. As he is set to face his rival for a third time inside the octagon, with legacy on the line for both Poirier and McGregor.

UFC 264, headlined by Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3, is likely to take place in front of spectators, though a location for the event has yet to be confirmed. McGregor previously proposed fighting Poirier at the AT&T Stadium home to the Dallas Cowboys in Texas.

It is likely Dana White will try and meet McGregor’s wishes, considering future UFC events like UFC 261, UFC 262, and UFC 263 that are now booked to take place in front of fans.

The full line-up for UFC 264 has yet to be confirmed. The order of fights may get shuffled as bouts get added or fall off this historic Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier card. The scheduled bouts for the event so far include:

  • Lightweight – Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier
  • Welterweight – Gilbert Burns vs Stephen Thompson
  • Flyweight – Jennifer Maia vs Jessica Eye
