Yermín Mercedes of the Chicago White Sox and Eric Hosmer of the San Diego Padres have been named Players of the Week for the American and National League respectively in the first of the 2021 MLB Highlights to start the new Major League Baseball season.
2021 MLB Highlights: Mercedes Comes Out Hot
Yermín Mercedes hadn’t had any significant Major League time before this season and was called up last August. He did pinch-hit once, grounding out in his only plate appearance.
The White Sox acquired him in the minor-league portion of the 2017 Rule 5 draft. He had spent time with the Baltimore Orioles from 2014 through 2017 and was originally the property of the Washington Nationals as far back as 2011.
He finished the week going 9-for-14 with a 1.643 OPS, .643 average, and six RBI. Mercedes is the first player in Chicago White Sox history to record five hits in their first major league start.
The following day, Mercedes had hits in his first three at-bats, becoming the first player since 1900 to begin a season with eight straight hits.
Hosmer No Stranger to Awards
Eric Hosmer’s resume includes consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 2013 through 2015 and again in 2017 when he also won the Silver Slugger Award.
He was the MVP of the 2016 MLB All-Star Game and was a member of the 2015 Kansas City Royals that won the World Series.
After the 2017 season, Hosmer became a free agent and signed an eight-year contract with the San Diego Padres.
With Tatis Jr. now out with a serious that could see him miss significant time, Hosmer amongst others will be called on to pick up the slack.
