Next in Overtime Heroics‘ 32 in 32 series is a New Orleans Saints mock draft. The franchise needs to move on from Drew Brees, as the future Hall of Famer announced his retirement earlier this year. With the Saints in salary-cap trouble, GM Mickey Loomis and his front office must refresh a squad that was built for a Super Bowl run in 2020. New Orleans is a franchise that expects to compete; rebuilding isn’t in the Big Easy faithful vernacular. New Orleans owns eight picks in the upcoming draft. It’s time to play some fantasy GM with a New Orleans Saints mock draft.
New Orleans Saints 2021 Mock Draft: Day One
1.28 | Davis Mills | Quarterback | Stanford
Many draft experts face difficult decisions when tasked with a New Orleans Saints mock draft. The Saints could go in any direction with pick 28. I’d select Stanford quarterback Davis Mills. The 22-year-old is a passer with a big arm, however, there are some accuracy issues. New Orleans has two serviceable starters in Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston. Even though it is difficult envisioning one of them as the long-term replacement to Brees, they can hold down the fort.
That can allow Sean Payton to develop Mills in the background. The head coach owns experience developing unheralded quarterbacks; Mills is a pocket passer with power. He is the archetypal quarterback that Payton likes. New Orleans can draft the heir to the throne and let him develop away from the spotlight.
New Orleans Saints 2021 Mock Draft: Day Two
2.60 | Ronnie Perkins | EDGE | Oklahoma
After letting Trey Hendrickson walk in free agency, the team needs a replacement, and in this New Orleans Saints mock draft, they get just that. Ronnie Perkins from Oklahoma could fit the bill. Like Hendrickson, Perkins is a speed rusher with grit and an aggressive attitude. Perkins can compliment Cam Jordan as the speedy defender on the weak side of the formation. He is a competitor that loves to attack the quarterback. Perkins should fit in well with the Saints on and off the field. Perkins is a solid tackler that should positively contribute to run defense as well.
3.98 | Talanoa Hufanga | Safety | USC

The Saints are a team that loves operating out of nickel and dime formations on base downs. The safety room is a position that should get help in the draft. Talanoa Hufanga could fall to New Orleans in the middle rounds. Hufanga could develop into a starting safety one day, although he owns all the attributes to be a rookie contributor. Hufanga tracks the ball well and reads the middle of the field very well. New Orleans can take advantage of the experience at the safety position to groom Hufanga into an every-down player.
3.105 | Chazz Surratt | Linebacker | North Carolina
Fan-favourite Alex Anzalone left New Orleans in free agency, as did Kwon Alexander. Therefore, in this New Orleans Saints mock draft, they will take an athletic linebacker. Chazz Surratt is a wiry, sideline-to-sideline linebacker that can line up alongside Demario Davis. Surratt is a heavy tackler with solid technique. What he lacks in physical size, he makes up for with speed and a great attitude. The North Carolina man can fill the roles vacated by Alexander and Anzalone in 2021.
New Orleans Saints 2021 Mock Draft: Day Three
4.133 | Cade Johnson | Wide Receiver | South Dakota State
In today’s NFL, teams have to have wide receiver depth. With this pick, the New Orleans Saints just take the board as it falls to them. Cade Johnson is a talented, highly athletic, and strong wideout that can provide something different to the Saints offense. He is also good at making contested catches, which could be a key trait if Hill or Winston are playing quarterback.
6.218 | Tre Norwood | Defensive Back | Oklahoma
Sticking with the theme of playing nickel and dime personnel, this New Orleans Saints mock draft sees them take a defensive back to play nickel back. Tre Norwood is a quick defensive back that loves sticking his hands in places they shouldn’t be. His speed masks his tracking ability as his footwork is sloppy. Nonetheless, finding a talented, hungry defensive back in the sixth round represents solid value for the Saints.
7.229 | Shi Smith | Wide Receiver | South Carolina
In this New Orleans Saints mock draft, I selected the best player available with this pick. Shi Smith falls to the Saints, and Sean Payton gets a speedster to stretch the field vertically. The addition of Smith adds a new element to the Saints passing game
7.255 | Larry Rountree III | Running Back | Missouri
With their last pick of the draft, the Saints take a running back to fill the depth chart and act as emergency insurance for Alvin Kamara. Rountree owns a decent burst and solid vision, while he could also play a role on special teams.
