When news broke that Arlovski vs Sherman was finalized and “The Pitbull” was stepping in for Parker Porter, many fans were awed by the serious step up in competition for Sherman, going from facing Porter to the legend in Arlovski.
Arlovski vs Sherman was made on short notice after Porter withdrew from the bout with Sherman for undisclosed reasons. Another short-notice bout that has fireworks written all over it is our main event of Kelvin Gastelum vs Robert Whittaker. Originally scheduled to face Paulo Costa, a “bad flu” would sideline “Borrachina” and leave us with this incredible main event instead.
More amazing fights to watch out for on UFC Vegas 24 include; Luis Pena vs Alex Munhoz, Natan Levy vs Austin Hubbard, and the co-main event between Drakkar Klose and Jeremy Stephens. You can’t forget about the main event of course. Where the matchup that failed to come to fruition years ago is finally happening when Whittaker and Gastelum go toe-to-toe. With all these amazing fights, we could spend eons talking about them. So, let’s jump right in to the Arlovski vs Sherman breakdown!
The Road To Arlovski vs Sherman
Andrei Arlovski (30-20-2NC, 19-14-1NC UFC)
“The Pitbull” is a legend of our sport who has been one part of some of the greatest heavyweight MMA fights the world has ever witnessed. Making a start to his professional career in 1999, Arlovski is a true testament to the age old adage of, “age is just a number.”
Competing for notorious promotions such as Affliction, M-1, Strikeforce, WSOF, Elite XC, and even ONE FC, “The Pitbull” isn’t just a UFC veteran. Arlovski’s career was already successful long before he signed with the world’s premier organization that is the UFC.
On the road to Arlovski vs Sherman, “The Pitbull” has gone 3-2 in his last five. Bouncing back from a knockout at the hands of Jarzinho Rozenstruik with two decision victories over Philipe Lins and Tanner Boser respectively, Arlovski was then matched with the promising British prospect Tom Aspinall. However, a second-round rear-naked choke submission would be enough to end Arlovski’s two-fight win streak at UFC Vegas 19.
Now looking to make his way back to the win column, “The Pitbull” hopes to come out on top of this short-notice battle of age vs wisdom that is Arlovski vs Sherman.
Chase Sherman (15-6, 3-5 UFC)
Once cut by the UFC, Sherman has breathed new life into his MMA career after a brief stint in Bare Knuckle FC. After getting cut due to a 2-5 stretch with the UFC, Sherman returned to Island Fights and after three TKO finish victories, Sherman would be given another chance by Dana White and the UFC brass.
First getting a start to professional MMA in promotions such as FFI and Island Fights, “The Vanilla Gorilla” acquired a 9-1 record leading into his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 92, against Justin Ledet. Losing his debut, Sherman’s four-fight win streak was snapped, and he wouldn’t get back into the win column his next fight either. Losing that one as well, this time due to a KO at the hands of Walt Harris at UFC Fight Night 103.
From there, “The Vanilla Gorilla” would go 2-3, with notable losses to Shamil Abdurakhimov and Augusto Sakai. After Sherman’s loss at UFC Fight Night 137, he would get cut by the UFC. Returning to Island Fights, and going on the big run we previously covered to earn his way back to the UFC.
Returning at UFC on ESPN+ 29 against Isaac Villanueva, “The Vanilla Gorilla” would continue the streak he started in Island Fights and win via TKO in round two. Triumphantly returning, and making a statement to the rest of the division with that spectacular finish over Villanueva. Now full circle on our road to Arlovski vs Sherman, let’s dive into the fight itself!
Arlovski vs Sherman Fight Breakdown and Prediction
Arlovski vs Sherman features two solidified knockout artists looking to make a run at the upper echelon of the heavyweight division. At just 31 years of age, Sherman is in the prime of his career. While Arlovski is defying the rules of aging with every performance.
Much like the legend Overeem, Arlovski’s game has been steadily evolving. Once a brawler with ferocious power, we have seen “The Pitbull” transform into a more technical fighter with a much slower and methodical approach. When controlling the pace such as he did in the Boser fight, Arlovski has shown that he will utilize his massive wealth of experience and pick his opponents apart.
For Sherman, he is the definition of a finisher. With 14 KO/TKO finishes out of 15 victories, “The Vanilla Gorilla” will look to do what he does best, and find that knockout shot.
As far as strategy goes, many would say Arlovski’s best bet is to make this a complete MMA match, and force his fellow knockout artist to grapple. Mixing in the kickboxing, clinch game, and grappling to test every facet of Sherman’s MMA skills. For “The Vanilla Gorilla”, many would say his best bet is to go forward, stay in Arlovski’s face, and make this a dog-fight. Force Arlovski’s weathered chin to try and bear the burden of Sherman’s fearsome power, and utilize his youthful agility in the pocket where reflexes and speed could overwhelm the older and potentially much slower fighter.
Arlovski vs Sherman Prediction
No matter what happens, this short-notice fight is following the trend of many short-notice fights. Where the matchup made after an opponent falls out is considered by the majority of people to be more exciting of a fight then the original one.
Many could point to Sherman’s insane power and finish rate and say that Arlovski’s chin won’t be able to handle it. Or, you could look at the matchup and say the experience and technique of “The Pitbull” will be way too much for “The Vanilla Gorilla” to handle.
Arlovski vs Sherman prediction: Andrei Arlovski via third round TKO.
