Ramos vs Algeo: Meet the Fighters

Ricardo Ramos

At just 25 years old, Ricardo Ramos is a veteran of the fight game already. The young Brazilian has been fighting professionally since 2012 and holds a record of 14-3 (5-2 in UFC). Debuting in the UFC back in 2017, Ramos has kept active and looks to add another win to his resume at UFC Vegas 24.

Ricardo began his UFC tenure on a three-fight win streak, including an absolutely brutal, yet beautiful, spinning back elbow KO victory over Aiemann Zahabi. He rode this win streak into a battle of prospects when he faced Said Nurmagomedov in February of 2019. Ramos would taste defeat for the first time within the promotion by losing to Said’s own spinning attack, with a nasty spinning back kick and it was now time for Ricardo to go back to the drawing board.

Ramos would bounce back swiftly following the devastating loss to Said and pick up two more wins, one via unanimous decision and the other by way of a Rear Naked Choke submission. However, in his most recent outing against Lerone Murphy, an undefeated featherweight prospect from England, he would fall short again with another TKO loss.

It is clear that early on in the UFC, Ramos is being given very tough fights and winning the majority of them and his fight with Bill Algeo will be a chance to get back in the win column for the first time since November of 2019. Algeo is another great prospect in his own right and will give Ricardo another solid test. Should Ramos come out on top, he will be very close to fighting someone with a number next to their name by the end of the year.

Bill “Señor Perfecto” Algeo

Many Dana White’s Contender Series alum that loses on the show do not get called up to the UFC. At least not without getting a second chance on the show first. However, for Bill Algeo, this was not the case. After losing a unanimous decision of DWCS he would not receive a contract and go on to fight in Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

It is here where Bill would bounce back and secure a victory. We see this a lot for fighters that lose on DWCS. They will go back to the smaller promotions, rack up a couple of wins and then get another chance. For Algeo, he was called straight to the big leagues, and what a test he would get in his UFC debut.

Algeo would find himself across the cage from a legend of the featherweight division, Ricardo Lamas in August of 2020. While Bill did fall short in this bout, he stayed very competitive and the fact that he could hang with someone as accomplished as Lamas said a lot about his skillset. So much so that the UFC would grant him another bout following the loss and this time Algeo would make sure to capitalize on the opportunity.

This fight would come against Spike Carlyle and gave everyone the show we were expecting with these two guys. Algeo weathered the barrages from Spike and really showcased how good he can be throughout a full three-round bout, picking up the unanimous decision victory. This win improved Algeo’s professional record to 14-5 (1-1 in UFC) and he now finds himself in another fight night main card slot against Ricardo Ramos.

In what will only be Bill’s third UFC bout, he finds himself in a very interesting spot. As alluded to earlier, the winner of this fight could be in line for a ranked opponent next or at the most one more win away from that chance. Algeo is a very exciting fighter and so is Ramos, which is why this battle of up and coming featherweights is so intriguing. Let’s take a look at how this fight just might play out!

Ramos vs Algeo: Fight Breakdown

Both of these fighters are the definition of well-rounded, each holding three KO/TKO victories and a combined 13 submissions. Excellent grapplers, with sharp striking, always leave fans with intrigue and this one is no different, especially when you have two of them!

Ramos is very athletic and loves throwing a variety of distance strikes, including spinning back elbows, spinning kicks to the head and body, and has a very nice calf kick. He utilizes a fast jab to keep his opponents fighting at his range, which allows for the “fancy” strikes just listed. However, Ricardo can get this fight to the canvas at any time and once there, stays very active in looking for the submission finish.

Algeo is also a good striker, but more technical and likes to pick shots, rather than go for some of the highlight finishes. This isn’t to say he won’t get into a brawl, because he absolutely will and more than likely will have to with a tough opponent like Ramos. However, similar to Ricardo, Bill is also an excellent grappler and loves going for the submission win.

In terms of who has the advantage in certain aspects of the fight, lean toward Ramos in the striking, but only when the fight is at a distance. If the standup gets into the clinch and dirty boxing range, Algeo may be able to find his most success here. Each fighter will be able to land clean and often when on the feet, which makes this such a toss-up when in this realm of the fight.

On the ground, it is much of the same. Both are excellent with their submission techniques and find ways to position themselves perfectly for the finish. As we all know, sometimes when we get two fantastic grapplers paired up against one another, it means we could be in store for an all-out war. Expect a very closely contested bout to kick off this main card and what could go down as the fight of the night winner when it’s all said and done!
