Welterweights Santiago Ponzinibbio and Miguel Baeza are officially scheduled to square off at UFC Fight Night on June 5th. The Argentine will attempt to erase Baeza’s zero when they meet inside the octagon.
News of Santiago Ponzinibbio vs Miguel Baeza was first reported by Combate.com. It’s since been announced by other media outlets.
Once considered the dark horse of the welterweight division, Ponzinibbio now sits on the outside looking in as pertains to the rankings. Yet, there’s little doubt he’ll be extremely motivated to remind viewers that he’s the man who owns finishes over the likes of Gunnar Nelson and Neil Magny.
There are few prospects who are more highly thought of than Baeza, who has begun his UFC tenure with three straight finishes, each more impressive than the next. Expect “Caramel Thunder” to match his opponent’s intensity as he tries to retain his unblemished record.
The Winner of Santiago Ponzinibbio vs Miguel Baeza May Jump Back Into the Rankings
Santiago Ponzinibbio (27-4, 9-3 UFC) began his pro MMA career 18-1 before being asked to appear on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2 in 2013. Unfortunately, “Gente Boa” suffered an injury in the semifinals, which kept him from competing in the finals. Still, the UFC was quick to sign the sizzling prospect once he healed up. After going .500 through his first four UFC bouts, Ponzinibbio really caught his stride. The American Top Team affiliate reeled off seven straight victories from 2015 to 2018, which he capped off with a fourth-round knockout over Magny. The 34-year-old mightily overcame career-threatening injuries to make another run up the ranks.
Miguel Baeza (10-0, 3-0 UFC) earned the opportunity to compete on the Contender Series in 2019 after he steamrolled all but one of his previous six foes. A unanimous decision win over Victor Reyna was enough for Dana White to award Baeza with a UFC contract. The MMA Masters product has looked incredible each time out, finishing Hector Aldana, Matt Brown, and Takashi Sato. The 28-year-old is undeniably one of the brightest young talents in the entire promotion.
