Latest MLB News: The Injury
At the bottom of the second inning, Phillies third baseman Jean Segura tried to beat out a slow roller hit to Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford, which resulted in Segura stepping awkwardly on the first base bag, which would lead to an apparent leg injury. As soon as Segura hit the base, he came up limping, favoring his right leg. By the way, it looks, he might have strained his right quadriceps. Phillies manager Joe Girardi was quoted, “Obviously, we’ll have a better idea of what we’re dealing with.”
This is the latest MLB news in a slue of injuries that the Phillies have had to deal with over that last week. Infielder Didi Gregorius and utility infielder Ronald Torreyes are out due to elbow soreness and COVID-19 health and safety protocols. With the latest news of Segura being out for the near distant future, the Phillies infield will consist of Rhys Hoskins, Brad Miller, Alec Bohm, and Nick Maton.
The Phillies also plan to call up Scott Kingery from the Alternate Training Site to relieve this depleted infield. Kingery is the only healthy infielder left on the 40-man roster, but he struggles as of late.
The loss of Segura will affect how Girardi sets his lineup in the future. Segura was having a great season so far at the plate with a slash line of .333/.359/.809.
