Another edition of the Overtime Heroics: Cheap Seats Chatter podcast is live now on Spotify. This edition features writers Alex Clark, Mathias Altman-Kurosaki, and Joe Borek as they talk about the top stories in baseball.
Now that the regular season has officially begun, the crew from Cheap Seats Chatter comes together to talk about the biggest stories and to figure out which are the real deal and which will have the staying power of two-week-old milk.
No-Hitter Double Feature
Over the first few weeks of the season, baseball fans were treated to not one, but two instances of one of the most impressive feats in all of baseball.
Joe Musgrove made San Diego history by throwing the first no-hitter in Padres history in a 3-0 win against the Texas Rangers. Musgrove achieved the feat in 112 pitches in which 77 were strikes. San Diego was the last remaining baseball franchise without a no-hitter but achieved it in their 8,206th game.
The second came from the lefty Carlos Rodon throwing a no-hitter against the Indians in an 8-0 win. Rondon, who wasn’t tendered in 2020, made it 8 ⅓ innings perfect before hitting catcher Roberto Perez in the foot with an inside slider. He proceeded to get the next two outs with ease to secure the achievement.
To put both games together, both perfect game attempts ended with a hit-by-pitch.
Truth or Fiction
While the stats never lie, the small sample size of games has shown stats that may or may not hold up over the course of a long season. Among the topics discussed are the Seattle Mariner hot start, the Yankees at the bottom of the East, and the Mets holding onto first place.
The final topic for the show was going over some of the stat leaders in baseball. Corbin Burnes has been one of the top pitchers with an impressive strikeout to walk ratio of 40:0 showing the model of efficiency.
