ONE on TNT 4: Results and Takeaways

ONE Championship gave us a night to remember where prospects would rise and legends would fall. We saw it all at ONE on TNT 4. We have possibly our next lightweight title contender, a new double champ, and we had a strange finish with Kirill Grishenko vs Oumar Kane but we will get to that shortly. ONE Championship showed the world once again their greatness showcasing many performances from the individuals throughout the card. Let us discuss the results and takeaways of ONE on TNT 4

Colbey Northcutt Wins Via First Round Submission (Armbar)

The brightest prospect of the night came in the form of Colbey Northcutt. She defeated Courtney Martin in a dominant performance where she would secure the armbar early in the first. Northcutt (2-1-0) is finally making a name for herself and becoming much more than “Sage Northcutt’s sister”. Colbey has proven herself to be an extremely high-level grappler and with her last two performances being so one-sided, she will hopefully be matched against someone with either equal level grappling or really high level striking. If matched against a high-level striker, Colbey would really be able to show off her karate more than she has done already.

Jackie Buntan Wins Via Majority Decision

ONE on TNT 4 only had a single Muay Thai fight where we saw Jackie Buntan stay undefeated as she won a controversial decision against Ekaterina Vandaryeva. Buntan put pressure on and showed dominance and initiative but this all paid a price. Ekaterina was noticeably fighting in a defensive style which although led her to take less damage, also convinced the judges that she wasn’t pulling the trigger and was too hesitant against the 23-year-old prodigy. Buntan has a bright future ahead of herself and we could even see a belt wrapped around her waist in the next few years.

Shinya Aoki Wins Via Submission (Armbar)

ONE on TNT 4 saw mixed martial arts veteran and former champion Shinya Aoki win his trilogy bout against Eduard Folayang with an armbar that came four minutes and 20 seconds into the first round. Following the dominant performance, Sage Northcutt went straight to Twitter to congratulate and politely call out Aoki. Shinya replied to this by simply saying “Eat s**t”. What an exciting matchup that could be on the horizon for fight fans across the globe.

Kirill Grishenko Wins Via KO/TKO (Retirement)

ONE on TNT 4 gave the fans a strange finish where Oumar Kane would get punched at the end of the second round and then proceed to lay on his back which confused viewers as he didn’t seem to be fazed by the strike initially. However, Kane could not continue and the fight was called off leaving the world disappointed. Grishenko proved himself yet again and showed that his high-level technique is almost unmatched in the heavyweight division. With a few more victories under his belt, we could see him compete for gold soon.

Rae Yoon OK Wins Via Unanimous Decision

Our fight of the night came in the form of Rae Yoon OK vs Eddie Alvarez. “The Underground King” was looking to make up for his unfortunate last performance where he was disqualified (now a no contest) for illegal strikes to the back of the head. This was not the case as the hungry OK came to make a statement as he did by dropping Alvarez in the first round. Throughout the rest of the fight, both men would exchange heavy leather but neither man would fall.

When the bell rang and the decision was made, fans watching around the world came to the sad conclusion that mixed martial arts legend Alvarez might just be on his last leg in this brutal sport. MMA is unpredictable though so we never know what is next in store for “The Underground King” Eddie Alvarez.

Reinier De Ridder Wins Via Unanimous Decision

The main event of ONE on TNT 4 gave us the highly anticipated rematch between Aung La N Sang and Reiner De Ridder. “The Dutch Knight” defeated “The Burmese Python” by unanimous decision to steal the former double champs’ second belt. De Ridder called for a third belt after snatching two away from La N Sang. The undefeated champion could solidify himself as ONE Championships greatest athlete to ever compete in the promotion if he goes on to defeat the winner of Brandon Vera vs Arjan Bhullar

Reiner proved at ONE on TNT 4 that not only does he have La N Sang’s number, but that he has all the capabilities to dismantle the promotions best athletes. We did see improvements in Aung’s ground game as he slithered out of De Ridder’s tight arm-triangle early in the first round, but ultimately the top pressure was too much for him. “The Dutch Knight” went on to showcase with a grappling clinic, putting not one, not two, but three divisions on notice.
