Messi has been debating his future for some time now.

According to TVE, Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has informed the club that he will stay beyond this season.

Messi attempted to leave the club last summer and is now in the final weeks of his current contract.

The Argentine’s future remained uncertain, with Manchester City and PSG both interested in signing him.

Messi’s father, Jorge, who also serves as his agent, has flown to Spain to meet with club president Joan Laporta to discuss his son’s future path.

They have informed the Catalans that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner intends to stay with the club. Messi however, has made it clear to Laporta that more investment in the team is required if he is to win more trophies.

Barcelona finished the season prior to this trophyless, something strange for a player considered to be the greatest ever.

Ronald Koeman won his first as manager when he won the Copa del Rey earlier this month. The ecstacy it brought with it to Messi whilst lifting it – was evident for all to see.

As touched on earlier, significant investment is said to the determining factor in nullifying any inclination of their star player pursuing football elsewhere and securing his position at the club for the foreseeable future.
