Since their return in April, Bellator has been giving the fans stacked events that have lived up to and beyond the hype. One of the many fights this Friday looking to maintain this is Patricky Freire vs Peter Queally. Also, on May 7th not only do we witness the return of MMA legend Anthony Johnson in a light heavyweight quarter-final Grand Prix matchup, but we will also be on the edge of our seats as Juan Archuleta squares off against Sergio Pettis in a bantamweight title clash. With so much in store for us, let us discuss a key bout happening earlier in the main card.
Patricky Freire
Lightweight contender and MMA veteran Patricky Freire is looking to jump right back into the win column after a decision loss to Tofiq Musayev. The name “Pitbull” runs in the family as brother and double champion Patricio Freire shares this title. Patricky heads into this bout with everything to gain after an impressive 2-1 run with RIZIN but with success comes struggle. “Pitbull” is currently ranked number 2 in the Bellator lightweight division and although a win against an unranked opponent shouldn’t do much if victorious Freire could be stuck at a dead end as his brother holds the championship in that division.
If coming out on top at Bellator 258, the only matchup that makes sense for “Pitbull” is Brent Primus, but we will wait and see if he can defeat Queally first. Patricky Freire vs Peter Queally has fight of the night written all over it, however, so does almost every bout on this card. “Pitbull” will use his explosive power and high pace to bring Peter into the deepest waters and as the pressure lays on Queally, Patricky will become more composed and look for the trademark overhand.
Peter Queally
Ireland’s own Peter Queally has the opportunity of a lifetime on May 7th, where he could potentially shock the world, which should put him right at the top of the division and possibly next in line for the title shot. The underdog heads into his third Bellator match with one win and one loss. Queally is best known for his calm defensive style, he leaves his hands down when trying to find his distance which can be a big problem. Peter throws so many feints on the back foot that when he actually pushes forward, he finds a lot of success due to catching his opponents off guard.
Queally can find himself in extremely dangerous situations but if you want to beat him, you must separate him from consciousness as he has never been finished in his entire career despite the damage he has taken. The Irishman will look for a subtle change in style when he faces his toughest opponent yet in “Pitbull” but that’s just more of a reason why we are in for a classic with Patricky Freire vs Peter Queally.
Patricky Freire vs Peter Queally Breakdown
Freire has immense pressure and power but Queally’s patience will be key. If Peter does make subtle changes in his style, it could very well throw “Pitbull” off of his game. Queally wants to grapple but not too offensively, he doesn’t want his back to touch the canvas so the clinch is where he wants to spend the majority of his time. Peter must keep his hands up at all costs as his composed confidence has got him dropped in the past and a veteran like Freire will not let Queally away with keeping his guard down.
Patricky Freire vs Peter Queally is going to be fireworks. Both men have the power and a lot of experience, only competition sets them apart. The feet can be a very dangerous place for both men but it will most likely be where the majority of this bout takes place. Not that neither man can but submissions will be very surprising to see in this matchup. If Peter can close distance quick enough, Patricky will not be able to make him pay with an overhand right. Queally’s best chance of a finish will be on the exit of the clinch where he can potentially find the timing for a hook.
