Over the years the NBA has seen several top-drawer point guards come and go. Here we look at separating the very good from the simply sensational as we assess the best point guards of all time.
Number 5. Isaiah Thomas
When you want to talk about legacy being loyal is one quality that will help with that. Isiah Thomas was certainly that; he was taken by the Pistons as the second overall pick back in 1981 and remained in Detroit through to his retirement in 1994.
Things started well for Thomas as he made the Rookie First Team but by the time he called it a day he’d won much bigger honours in the shape of two NBA Championships and an associated Finals MVP award. He averaged a highly respectable 19.2 points and 9.3 assists across his entire career.
Number 4. John Stockton
Stockton might not have lifted the Championship like Thomas but he definitely deserves to rank above him here. Stockton was another one man team with the Utah Jazz the lucky recipients of his services for 19 seasons; they made the playoffs in all of them.
If you’re looking for a way to label the Jazz man then we’d suggest as a creative force; he led the NBA in assists for nine consecutive seasons between 1987 and 1996 with his game average of 14.5 in 1990 a record. His 2.2 steals average that ran across his entire career isn’t bad either!
Number 3. Oscar Robertson
You know a list is loaded with top class talents when the Big O can only make it to number three. Robertson split his career between two sides, the Cincinnati Royals and the Milwaukee Bucks. With the former, Robertson won the league MVP award courtesy of a league high 11.5 assists and 30.4 points per game. Leading the league wasn’t a rarity for Robertson though given he managed to do so 12 times across a range of categories.
Then came his spell with the Bucks. His game averages softened but still he formed a key part of the team that won the 1971 Championship. Despite all that, 1962 is probably his crowning moment; Robertson recorded a season long triple-double.
Number 2. Steph Curry
It might seem insane to include a man that is still playing in the NBA ahead of the legends we’ve listed to the point. Steph Curry, however, is just that good.
We could focus our attention anywhere to be honest given he has three Championships and two MVP awards to his name but we will instead opt to highlight the fact he’s one of the best three point shooters we’ve ever seen; already he sits second on the all time list and plenty back him to break it.
Whether he does or doesn’t really isn’t importantly. He’ll go down as one of the best players ever let alone one of the best point guards of all time.
Number 1. Magic Johnson
That’s right, of course it is Magic Johnson topping our list. Johnson made the All-Star game on 12 occasions during his career with the associated MVP award coming his way twice. More importantly, he won another six MVP awards during his time as a player with three post season wins and three full season awards.
Of course, individual honours are nice – and a man that topped the assist rankings in four seasons and the steals leaderboard twice will be all too familiar with that sort of glory – but with five NBA Championships means Johnson has done it all.
