MLB Power Rankings: 1-10
1. San Diego Padres Record: 30-18 Previous: 6
Having swept three straight series en route to a nine-game winning streak, the Padres jumped into the top spot in the Week 8 MLB power ranking. A large reason for their success is their bullpen, which has posted a league-best 2.47 ERA, led by Mark Melancon, who leads MLB with 16 saves.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers Record: 29-18 Previous: 5
After two weeks of poor baseball, the Dodgers are back on track, riding a seven-game winning streak heading into week eight. Their bullpen has posted an ERA of 3.60, top five in baseball, while Kenley Jansen has re-established himself as one of the best relievers in the league.
3. Tampa Bay Rays Record: 30-19 Previous: 11
The Rays are the hottest team in baseball heading into week eight, currently riding an eleven-game winning streak. Tampa Bay is tied with the Dodgers for the fifth-best bullpen in baseball by ERA as Andrew Kittredge, Ryan Thompson, and Hunter Strickland have all posted sub 2.50 ERAs so far in 2021.
4. New York Yankees Record: 28-19 Previous: 9
Another team finally getting back on track, the Yankees are back in the top four after sweeping the White Sox last week. The Yankees bullpen has posted an ERA of 2.95, third-best in baseball, as Aroldis Chapman has only allowed one run in 19 innings of work in 2021.
5. Boston Red Sox Record: 29-19 Previous: 4
The Red Sox had another great week in week seven, taking two of three games from the Blue Jays and Phillies. To the surprise of many, Boston has had a top ten bullpen by ERA, as Matt Barnes is having the best year of his career with 11 saves this season.
6. Chicago White Sox Record: 27-19 Previous: 1
The White Sox dropped five spots from the top spot after taking two of three from Minnesota but getting swept by the Yankees in week seven. The White Sox’ bullpen has posted an ERA of 3.83, 12th-best in baseball, led by offseason acquisition Liam Hendriks, who has posted an ERA of 2.50 in 18 innings of work in 2021.
7. San Francisco Giants Record: 28-19 Previous: 2
After sweeping the Reds in four games, the Giants got pummeled by the Dodgers, who swept them last week. The Giants’ bullpen has posted an ERA of 4.06, 14th-best in baseball, led by submarine specialist Tyler Rogers, who has only allowed two runs in 25 innings of work this season.
8. Oakland Athletics Record: 28-21 Previous: 3
The Athletics dropped five spots after an underwhelming week seven that included losing two of three to the Angels. The bullpen is arguably the team’s weakness, having posted a team bullpen ERA of 4.19, as the A’s have struggled to replace Liam Hendriks.
9. Houston Astros Record: 26-21 Previous: 7
After a great series against the Athletics that saw Houston take two of three, the team struggled and got swept by Texas last week. With Roberto Osuna out for the year, the Astros’ bullpen has been decent, currently posting an ERA of 4.06, the 13th-best in baseball.
10. St.Louis Cardinals Record: 26-21 Previous: 8
After a two-game sweep of the Pirates, the Cardinals lost two of three to the Cubs in week seven. Outside of closer Alex Reyes, who has only allowed two runs in 25 innings of work, the Cardinals’ bullpen has struggled, currently posting an ERA of 4.29, 19th-best in baseball.
MLB Power Rankings: 11-20
11. Cleveland Indians Record: 25-20 Previous: 13
The Indians got back on track in week seven, as they took two of three from the Angels to move up two spots. The bullpen is the strongest aspect of this team, as Emmanuel Clase and James Karinchak have been incredible, en route to a team ERA of 2.68, second-best in baseball.
12. New York Mets Record: 21-20 Previous: 12
Despite only being one game above .500, the Mets remain atop the NL East after going 3-3 in week seven. The Mets’ bullpen has been great, currently posting an ERA of 3.62, seventh-best in baseball, while Edwin Diaz has recorded seven saves.
13. Chicago Cubs Record: 24-22 Previous: 19
The Cubs moved up six spots to reach their highest ranking of the season after taking three of four from the Nationals and two of three from the Cardinals last week. The bullpen is the Cubs’ strength, as they have posted an ERA of 3.02 so far, fourth-best in MLB.
14. Milwaukee Brewers Record: 24-23 Previous: 14
The Brewers are one game above .500 through 47 games after going 2-3 against the Royals and Reds last week. The Brewers’ bullpen has struggled, 23rd in bullpen ERA at a mark of 4.63, and trading J.P. Feyersian to Tampa Bay won’t help matters.
15. Atlanta Braves Record: 23-24 Previous: 18
The Braves were able to get close to back to .500 in week eight, after taking three of four games from the Pirates. After losing Shane Greene in free agency, the Braves’ bullpen has struggled, currently posting an ERA of 4.62, 22nd-best in baseball.
16. Toronto Blue Jays Record: 23-23 Previous: 10
After cracking the top ten in week seven, the Blue Jays had an awful week eight, losing six of seven games to the Red Sox and Rays. Toronto’s bullpen has been very solid, currently sporting an ERA of 3.63, eighth-best in baseball despite Julian Merryweather, Jordan Romano, and Rafael Dolis all missing time due to injury.
17. Miami Marlins Record: 23-24 Previous: 22
The Marlins had their best week of the season, taking two of three from the Phillies and Mets in week seven. A crucial part of their success is their bullpen, which has posted an ERA of 3.65, ninth-best in baseball, led by Yimi Garcia, who has eight saves.
18. Philadelphia Phillies Record: 23-25 Previous: 15
The Phillies struggled in week seven, losing two of three to the Marlins and Red Sox as the team has gone 3-8 in their last 11 games. In 2020, the Phillies had the second-worst bullpen of all time, and despite making marginal improvements, their bullpen is still only 24th-best in baseball in 2021, currently posting an ERA of 4.68.
19. Kansas City Royals Record: 22-23 Previous: 24
After looking like all hope was lost for the Royals, the team got back on track last week, going 4-1 against the Brewers and Royals. Kansas City’s bullpen has been inconsistent at times as they have posted an ERA of 4.33 through 45 games, the 20th-best in baseball.
20. Washington Nationals Record: 20-23 Previous: 23
After a rough series that saw them losing three of four to the Cubs, the Nationals rebounded by sweeping the Orioles last week. The Nationals’ bullpen has kept them in contention in the NL East as their 3.79 mark is the 11th-best in MLB.
MLB Power Rankings: 21-30
21. Cincinnati Reds Record: 20-25 Previous: 17
The Reds had an absolutely atrocious week seven, losing six of seven games to the Giants and Brewers. The bullpen has been awful for this team, currently posting an ERA of 5.42, the 28th-best in baseball as Tejay Antone is their only reliever who has more than 13.0 innings pitched and a sub 4.00 ERA.
22. Seattle Mariners Record: 22-26 Previous: 16
After staying afloat for the first seven weeks of 2021, the Mariners finally struggled, losing all six of their games last week. Their bullpen has been decent, 16th-best in baseball with an ERA of 4.08, as Kendall Graveman has yet to allow a run in 16.2 innings of work this season.
23. Texas Rangers Record: 22-27 Previous: 25
After dropping three of four to the Yankees, the Rangers had a bounce-back series, sweeping the Astros. Texas’ bullpen has been decent through 49 games, currently posting an ERA of 4.07, 15th-best in the league, while Ian Kennedy has 11 saves.
24. Minnesota Twins Record: 18-29 Previous: 29
The Twins got somewhat back on track last week, taking two of three games from the Indians. A huge reason for the Twins’ disappointing season is their bullpen, which has posted an abysmal ERA of 4.85, the 25th-best in the league, and no one has been able to lock down the closer role.
25. Los Angeles Angels Record: 20-27 Previous: 20
The Angels continued to struggle in week seven, and with Mike Trout out 6-8 weeks, there is not much hope left for this team. Their bullpen, which has posted an ERA of 4.96, 26th-best in baseball, has not done them any favors in 2021, either.
26. Colorado Rockies Record: 19-29 Previous: 30
After getting swept by the Padres, the Rockies had their best series of 2021, sweeping the Diamondbacks. Playing at Coors Field does not help, but the Rockies’ bullpen has been horrendous, 29th in MLB with an ERA of 5.48 through 48 games.
27. Arizona Diamondbacks Record: 18-30 Previous: 21
The Diamondbacks have suffered a complete collapse, having lost 11 of their previous 12 games, including nine straight. A key reason for their collapse has been their bullpen, which has posted an atrocious ERA of 5.38, good for 27th in baseball.
28. Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 18-28 Previous: 27
The Pirates continued to struggle in week seven, losing five of six games to the Cardinals and Braves. Richard Rodriguez has been incredible, having only allowed one run in 19.1 innings of work, but everyone else has struggled, resulting in the Pirates ranking 18th in bullpen ERA at a mark of 4.19.
29. Detroit Tigers Record: 18-29 Previous: 28
The Tigers had a decent week seven, which saw them sweep the Mariners prior to losing two of three to Kansas City. Detroit’s bullpen has been one of the worst in MLB history through 47 games as their 5.78 bullpen ERA is far and away the worst in baseball.
30. Baltimore Orioles Record: 17-30 Previous: 26
After remaining afloat for the first seven weeks of the year, the Orioles finally fell into a slump, having lost 11 of their previous 12 games. Cesar Valdez has been a solid closer for this team, but everyone has struggled as the team’s 4.45 bullpen ERA ranks 21st in the league.
