France EURO 2020 Preview

France are coming into the EURO 2020 tournament as defending World Cup Champions after defeating Croatia in the World Cup final 4-2, and they still have the talent to make a deep run in this competition. They also come into the tournament as favourites to win, especially after their World Cup triumph in 2018. They return a majority of their squad, infused with a good mixture of young and old. Let’s take a look at their squad list, key players, players to watch, and a prediction on where I think they will finish.

Squad List

Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Mike Maignan (Lille)

Defenders: Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich), Leo Dubois (Lyon), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Presnel Kimpembe (Paris Saint-Germain), Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich), Lucas Digne (Everton), Clement Lenglet (Barcelona), Kurt Zouma (Chelsea)

Midfielders: N’golo Kante (Chelsea), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint-Germain), Corentin Tolisso (Bayern Munich), Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham)

Attackers: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Olivier Giroud (Chelsea), Kylian Mappen (Paris Saint-Germain), Marcus Thuram (Borussia Monchengladbach), Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco), Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona), Thomas Lemar (Atletico Madrid), Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona)

Key Players For France

Kylian Mbappe

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Kylian Mbappe is one of the best football players in the world, and only being 22 years of age, will be near or at the top for a long time. He has been the leader of his club team Paris Saint-Germain and will look to continue to lead the line for his country. After coming off of a World Cup title in 2018, Kylian Mbappe will be at the forefront of an already loaded French team.

Paul Pogba

Another player that is expected to be a major player in this French team. Paul Pogba is the catalyst in the midfield for the French and the one who makes everything happen throughout the midfield. Pogba is going to have to keep his 2018 World Cup form if France wants to win back-to-back major tournaments.

Players To Watch

Benjamin Pavard

This one may seem to be an odd one. But Pavard came onto the scene during the 2018 World Cup, where he anchored a full-back position for France, as well as the winning goal of the tournament for his incredible strike against Argentina in the Round of 16. Pavard is going to have to continue that form, and continue to provide the width for France to be as successful as they were in 2018.

Karim Benzema

Where do I start? Karim Benzema has been the top man at one of the best and most legendary clubs in the world at Real Madrid. Karim Benzema has also been away from the National Team for 5 years due to an alleged blackmail scheme that involved one of his former teammates. He has been brilliant for Madrid this season, scoring 29 goals in 45 appearances for Los Blancos this season. For France to win back-to-back major tournaments, he is going to have to carry that form over to the national team and bang in goals during this tournament.

France is the overwhelming favourite for Euro 2020, despite not being ranked the world number 1, which currently belongs to Belgium. France have the talent and the depth to make a deep run in this tournament. With that said, I do believe that it will be a really tall task for France to win back-to-back major tournaments. I predict they finish as a semifinalist.
