Grandal"s Injury
Grandal left Monday night"s game during his sixth-inning at-bat. He is expected to miss approximately 4-6 weeks before returning. Prior to Monday"s game, Grandal had suffered from a minor strained calf ailment. Grandal avoided a stint on the injured list by missing the previous weekend series against the Tigers in Detroit to rest.
Zavala was on the taxi squad for the series against the Tigers before being recalled this afternoon to now serve as the backup catcher for Zach Collins. Zavala will join several teammates that have been called to fill in, most recently Gavin Sheets and Jake Burger. Burger and Sheets have adjusted quite well, however, replacing Grandal"s plate appearances will prove to be difficult.
Grandal"s injury and time off will certainly hurt the White Sox, as the team has been plagued with injuries on what often feels like a daily basis. Grandal was slashing .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs in 63 games. He was also second in the league with 60 walks.
The White Sox remain in first place, despite the overwhelming amount of injuries. Grandal joins Adam Engel, Aaron Bummer, Evan Marshall, Jake Lamb, Nick Madrigal, Eloy Jiménez, Luis Robert and Jimmy Cordero on the injured list. Recent news of both Jiménez and Robert ideally returning sometime in August ahead of the pennant chase is promising. With Grandal potentially returning around the same time, or within weeks of other star players, the White Sox still have a shot at making the postseason, as long as *knocks on wood* other players remain healthy.
Here is to a speedy recovery for Grandal.
