The 2021 Red Sox has been enjoying quite the season. The team owns a one-and-a-half-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the competitive American League East. Red Sox Nation watched the team’s five all-stars, more than any other team. The club is expecting Chris Sale back from Tommy John surgery sometime next month. The team drafted the presumed number one, Marcelo Mayer, pick at four on Sunday . And then, on Monday, the club took the 23rd ranked draft prospect at 40, in Jud Fabian. Oh, and today they called up the number two prospect in the system, according to, Jarren Duran!

Duran was drafted by the Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of California State University, Long Beach as a second baseman. Duran, after a swing change working to generate more power, entered the 2020 season primed for a true breakout. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 minor league season was put on hold. It was not until 2021 that fans could catch a glimpse of his moonshots.

Duran slashed .270/.365/.561 with a 143 wRC+, 15 home runs, and 12 stolen bases in 46 games. The biggest hole in Duran’s swing comes by way of the strikeout, with a 23.7 K percentage. But, he has cut down that rate as of late, striking out just around 20 percent of at bats in June. Duran is rather new to playing the outfield and has made his fair share of rookie mistakes. Duran’s athleticism is a big reason why he switched to center field. His speed is absolutely legit. He can run the bases in 15 seconds flat!

A big piece of the Red Sox future is here, Red Sox fans. It is okay to get excited!
