The upcoming Premier league season has the potential to be one of the most competitive seasons in recent years. Manchester City will be the team to beat, Chelsea are coming off the back of their incredible Champions league win, Liverpool will be back to full strength and will be the same force they were and Leicester will look to finally reach the Champions league spots that they have just fallen short off in the last few seasons. But the team that people need to fear is Manchester United and here is why.
After finishing second in the league and reacthing the final of the Europa League, Manchester United began to show progress that they had failing to show in previous years and although much of the United fanbase is unhappy with the results there is plenty to be positive about!
With the addition of Jadon Sancho and potentially adding Raphael Varane to the mix, United have immediately targeted two positions that they have needed for years. Sancho is one of the best wingers in the world and with his silky dribbling and his desire to take his man on, he will add a flair to United that could cause full-backs serious damage, United are pretty solid on the right, Sancho, Greenwood, AWB and Daniel James, all solid options that can be rotated when needed, but with Sancho more than likely playing on the right, where does that leave Greenwood? United will have to replace Edison Cavani in the following summer but they should turn to Greenwood before looking elsewhere. The youngster is one of the best finishers in the league and is only getting better, another year of learning as the understudy to both Sancho and Cavani, could set the path for Greenwood to become this generations version of Robin Van Persie.
On the other hand, Raphael Varane is the type of player United fans have been desperate to have for years. World class, solid and experienced. One issue that I feel United have had for years is that they merely buy players to fill a gap for a short period of time. Players like Lindelof and Jones are not Manchester United quality, they are in the team because there are no other options but Raphael Varane is the man. Him and Maguire will have a incredible partnership, with the pace and power of Varane combined with the defensive qualities that Harry Maguire has shown, United finally have a solid central back pairing and with Luke Shaw in the form of his life and AWB only getting better, United have a beautifully balanced defence. My only concern with United at the back is the goalkeeper situation but whatever one is first choice is solid enough to keep many clean sheets.
The one gleaming concern for United is the midfield. Fernandes is key to everything United do going forward, Pogba is always a threat but that is going forward, going back is an issue. Fred, McTominay and Matic are currently the choices. Matic was once the best player in his position when at Chelsea but he is past his prime and is not able to play 38 games a season, McTominay is good but much better as a box-to-box player, which was clearly on show in the Leeds game last season in which he was given the license to get forward, scoring two goals in the process. Fred just is not good enough, lack of passing ability, prone to a mistake and not great going forward. One player that has to play if United want to cause damage this season is van de Beek, he is the key. Versatile, eye for a pass and can change the game in the blink of an eye. In the few games he played in last season he impressed, the Everton and Leipzig games stand out, but he was unable to kick on and spent most of his season on the bench but with a run of games and the team United are building, he could be the player that kicks United on.
All teams can look good on paper but it remains to be seen how they perform on the pitch but for me, I think United have as good as chance as any to win the league this season but one thing that is guaranteed is that Manchester United are one of the biggest threats.
