The free agency period this year has been a time of more goalie moves than most people can keep track of. With that in mind, here is an update on where some of the league’s top goalies have ended up so far since the expansion draft, as well as what teams can expect from their newly acquired goalies.
Seattle Kraken: Chris Driedger Key to Kraken Future Success
Chris Driedger is an amazing goalie who has done some great things for his former team. Fans can expect him to make some amazing saves, as well as contribute to hopeful future success for the Seattle Kraken organization. The goalie is fairly young and as such looks like he has room to grow, even though he could currently be considered as one of the top goalies in the league. Fans, teammates, and coaching staff can all be sure that they have a strong presence behind them in net.
Dallas Stars: Braden Holtby Looking to Recapture Vancouver Canucks Form
Braden Holtby has been a star starter since his time with the Washington Capitals. Although he didn"t have the best season with the Vancouver Canucks, he still is largely known to be one of the best in the business and could certainly make an impact with his new team. He likely will take the starting position as Ben Bishop has been injured and will more than likely need time to recover his form, while Anton Khudobin may either take a step down from his position as a backup or could be traded at some point.
Marc-Andre Fleury Looks to Stun in Chicago After Controversial Signing
Marc-Andre Fleury has been nothing but stunning as a player in the NHL and could be a massive difference-maker for the Chicago Blackhawks. While there was some controversy after his signing, including the fact that the president of the Vegas Golden Knights had apparently promised the player he would not be traded. Because of this, there was some doubt that the player would be okay with moving to Chicago, however, he has recently confirmed that he will play for the organization as they had hoped.
Frederik Andersen Looks to Start Chapter with New Team
Frederik Andersen was largely known as an elite goalie for the majority of his playing career. However, after his injury that required surgery, fans and coaches alike lost faith in his starting ability, and as such the player will likely be happy to start a new chapter with a new team. Overall, if the goalie can recover his form, the Carolina Hurricanes will have a solid starter on their hands. As well, he has a solid backup in Antti Raanta so if he needs the time to settle back in between the pipes and build up his form, he will likely be able to take whatever time he needs.
Petr Mrazek Looks to Make Impact with Toronto Maple Leafs and End Longest Playoff Drought in NHL History
Petr Mrazek has looked great throughout most of his career, and will likely make a large impact with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. He has a solid backup in Jack Campbell, which will see him have time to recover his form after having suffered an injury that required surgery on his thumb. Once the goalie recovers his form there is a chance that he could help the Leafs steady their form in the playoffs and possibly break the longest drought in NHL history.
Darcy Kuemper: Unsettled but Well-known Goalie
Darcy Kuemper is one of the most well-known names in hockey, having been in the game for a number of years. He has moved around the league to some extent but has settled in quickly where ever he has moved. There is a chance that the veteran netminder could be exactly what the Colorado Avalanche needs in a starter to make it farther in the playoffs, after having been through a tough playoff series against the Golden Knights in their last attempt.
Jaroslav Halak Traded Again
Jaroslav Halak is an amazing veteran netminder who has stepped up wherever he has landed in trades. Currently, this goalie has been serving as a backup, and he looks likely to keep playing that position with the Canucks, as Thatcher Demko looks strong and ready to take on the starting position with his team. If needed to step in, the veteran netminder is expected to be able to put up some amazing performances as he has done throughout his career.
