Perhaps the best or one of the best young NHL goalies in the league, Igor Shesterkin has officially cemented himself as a piece of the New York Rangers‘ future. Shesterkin’s new contract became the largest contract by a goalie after their rookie contract was up. At the time of the signing Philadelphia Flyers goalie, Carter Hart owned the largest contract after a rookie deal. Signing just minutes before Shesterkin, Hart only had that piece of history for less than 30 minutes.
Nevertheless, Igor Shesterkin and the Rangers signed a four-year pact that will pay him 22.4 million dollars. Making just over five and a half million dollars for the next four seasons the New York Rangers have locked down their franchise goalie for the foreseeable future.
Igor Shesterkin Career Overview
The 25-year-old goalie has played parts of two seasons with the Rangers. Starting in the 2019-20 season Shesterkin played in just 12 games and earned a ridiculous .932 save percentage and 2.52 goals-against average. After an impressive start to his career as a 24-year-old, the hype and expectations were off the charts for Shesterkin. Luckily he lived up to those expectations as he put together another strong campaign. Posting a 2.62 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. These impressive numbers solidified his starting goalie position.
Final Thoughts on the Historic Contract of Igor Shesterkin
The new Igor Shesterkin contract is beneficial for both the team and the player. Financial stability and a guarantee that he will be the New York Rangers‘ starting goalie for the next few seasons. For the team, they get a young goalie at a good price. Playing alongside fellow rising star goalie Alexander Georgiev the Rangers pack one of the more impressive goaltending combinations. The duo is cost-effective and is a formidable tandem that will frustrate opponents for years. Hopefully, Igor Shesterkin can continue his strong play from the 2021 season and continue to progress into a superstar goalie in the City that never sleeps.
