Mauricio Pochettino really needed a win today against newly promoted Troyes, after losing the Trophée des Champions 1-0 to Lille. That’s exactly what he did. It was a worrying start for the Ligue 1 title favourites after 9 minutes Oualid El Hajjam nodded in a header from a corner to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Ten minutes later Achraf Hakimi smashed in an equaliser on the half volley on his Ligue 1 debut.
2 minutes after that Kylian Mbappe finds Mauro Icardi who managed to poke the ball into the net for the visitors.
Troyes kept fighting and fighting for an equaliser but Abdou Diallo made a vital late tackle to deny the hosts, Tardieu had a longshot denied by Keylor Navas in the 90th minute and the Costa Rican had to make yet another vital stop on the following corner.
Although the Parisians were obvious favourites to win today, in their defence key players including Neymar, Marco Veratti, Leandro Paredes, Marquinhos and new signing Sergio Ramos were all absent. It’s fair to say Mauricio Pochettino won’t be majorly impressed with his team’s performance but they certainly did the job.
It’s early days but PSG are definitely expected to win the Ligue 1 title back off Lille with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Marco Veratti, Marquinhos and Keylor Navas already giving PSG a massive boost but with the new arrivals including Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos Achraf Hakimi, Gini Wijnaldum and the imminent arrival of Lionel Messi just means it’s extremely likely the Ligue 1 title will be heading back to the French capital.
