The UFC lightweight title looks set to be on the line at UFC 269 as Charles Oliveira vs Dustin Poirier is being targeted for the PPV event on December 11th according to MMA Fighting.
UFC 269 will potentially see the Brazilian making his first defense of the lightweight title having won it in May when he successfully defeated Michael Chandler via TKO in the 2nd round at UFC 262.
Dustin Poirier most recently earned back-to-back victories over rival Conor McGregor, taking a 2-1 lead in their trilogy series. ‘The Diamond’ defeated the Irishman at UFC 264 via a doctor’s stoppage with Mcgregor breaking his ankle at the end of the first round. He will now finally look to become the undisputed UFC lightweight champion for the very first time having been sat atop of the division’s rankings.
Charles Oliveira vs. Dustin Poirier: A Fight for the Ages
Charles Oliveira (31-8 MMA, 12-4 UFC) before capturing UFC gold was riding an eight-fight win streak which he extended to nine with his successful conquering of Chandler at UFC 262. That win streak spanned all the way back to his last loss which was to Paul Felder in 2017, which saw him turn the tide in the UFC as he went from a record of 3-4 in the organization to become one of the world’s most prized fighters. His victory column includes wins over Tony Ferguson, Jim Miller, Kevin Lee, and most recently Chandler. Since making his move to lightweight from featherweight he has only lost once, going 9-1 in the division.
Dustin Poirier (28-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) will be making his third title fight appearance having previously fought and defeated Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight belt, before failing in his efforts of becoming the undisputed champion with his submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Lafayette, Louisanna born UFC star has built quite the resume in his career with wins over McGregor, Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and Anthony Pettis. Poirier, like Oliveira, has become the best version of himself since making the move to lightweight from featherweight having only lost twice in the division.
The former interim UFC lightweight champion had originally passed on fighting for the belt to pursue a trilogy fight vs Conor McGregor in July with settling the score between the two his priority at the time. Now he will look to make his second challenge for the undisputed title at lightweight a successful one at UFC 269.
While for Oliveira, he will get the opportunity to answer the questions remaining from his title capturing at UFC 262 as a far from flawless performance in his regard left fans pondering his integrity as a champion.
