After a week’s hiatus from fights at the beloved Apex in Las Vegas, light heavyweights return to the octagon this Saturday. They look to put on a showcase performance to take one step closer towards the division’s championship ranking.

A Look at the Fighters

Anthony Smith is a veteran of the worlds leading combat sports promotion, he has faced greats such as Jon Jones and Rashad Evans. As the legends fade, the prospects rise and the next inline is one Ryan “Superman” Spann. “Lionheart” is an overall great fighter with many deadly weapons, his elbows and knees might just be his most dangerous.

Ryan Spann is a promising prospect in the light heavyweight division, his last time out he defeated Misha Cirkunov via KO. Spann does have good distance management but lets himself down by entering dirty the boxing range recklessly, doing this against Smith can lead to two things; an elbow on the jaw from “Lionheart”, or a lethal combination from “Superman”.

Smith must try and clinch with Spann for early success, his grappling can definitely win the battle for him but the entry and exits on the clinch will dictate the pace for the fight. Another technique that could lead to success for “Lionheart” would be leg kicks, as seen against Jimmy Crute, Smith can end a match with a perfectly placed kick, and with legs as long as Spann’s, that will lead to a crucial weapon in Anthony Smiths gameplan.

Spann can definitely grapple with Smith but probably should avoid doing so unless absolutely necessary. “Superman” has heavy hands and should counter clinch attempts with short hooks and even pivoting uppercuts. Spann should look to defend leg kicks and fire back at the body of Smith to try and exhaust him in the early rounds. Smith vs Spann is a must-watch battle that will take place at the UFC Apex this Saturday!
