Five Astros Named Gold Glove Finalist

On Thursday, the Houston Astros announced that five players had been selected as finalists for the 2021 Rawlings Gold Glove at each player’s respected positions. Carlos Correa (shortstop), Zack Greinke (pitcher), Yuli Gurriel (first base), Martin Maldonado (catcher), and Kyle Tucker (right field).

The Finalist For Gold Glove

Carlos Correa

The soon-to-be free-agent at season’s end, Correa will be looking to win the first Gold Glove of his career. This season, Correa has been one of the best shortstops in the American League. Correa leads the American League in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for position players at a 7.2. Correa also ranks first in Defensive WAR at 2.9. J.P. Crawford of the Seattle Mariners and Andrelton Simmons of the Minnesota Twins were also finalists at shortstop.

Zack Greinke

Greinke will be looking to win his seventh Gold Glove as a pitcher. This season, Greinke led the AL in fielding percentage with 1.000% and first in double plays with six. As finalists for the Gold Glove, Greinke will be joined by Dallas Keuchel of the Chicago White Sox and Jose Berrios of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Yuli Gurriel

With a batting title to his name, Gurriel will be looking to take home the first Gold Glove of his career. This season, Gurriel led the AL in assists at first base with 86 and first with total zone runs at first base with 12. If Gurriel wins a Gold Glove, he will join Jeff Bagwell as the only Astros to win a Gold Glove at first base. Matt Olsen of the A’s and Jared Walsh of the Los Angeles Angels are also finalists.

Martin Maldonado

The three finalists for the Gold Glove at catcher are all worthy of the award. Maldonado has been the driving force behind the plate for the Astros this season. This season, Maldonado led the AL in catcher caught stealing with 19. Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals and Sean Murphy of the A’s are finalists for the Gold Glove at catcher.

Kyle Tucker

Tucker is looking to win the first Gold Glove of his career. This season, Tucker leads all right fielders in field percentage with a .992%, second in putouts with 246, and third in double plays as a right fielder with two. Hunter Renfroe of the Boston Red Sox and Joey Gallo of the New York Yankees are also finalists for a Gold Glove in right field. If Tucker were to win a Gold Glove, he would join Michael Bourn as the only other Astro to win the award.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, November 7th, on ESPN.
