And then there were two. After a number of drama and plot twists shrouded the tournament, the dust has now been settled in the ONE Atomweight World Grand Prix as the last two women standing have been determined.
The finale will feature the Indian sensation, Ritu Phogat, and Thai superstar, Stamp Fairtex in the classic match-up of wrestling versus striking to figure out the rightful challenger to the reigning Atomweight titleholder, Angela Lee.
ONE Atomweight Grand Prix Finals
Both Phogat and Stamp earned their ticket to the finals by defeating their respective opponents last night at the ONE: NEXTGEN, with Ritu swarming Jenelyn Olsim with her wrestling supremacy and Stamp outstriking Julie Mezabarba through three rounds of action.
In the quarterfinal round, the “Indian Tigress” survived an early onslaught from Meng Bo and took over the rest of the match which earned her a unanimous decision victory, while Stamp Fairtex ground out a close split decision win over Alyona Rassohyna.
This particular match-up between the two is quite interesting because if either could survive each other’s style, then the victory could go to any of them, simply put it as a toss-up between these two athletes.
However, the former two-sport world champion could have a slight advantage over the number four-ranked Atomweight because of her constantly and rapidly developing in the grappling department, particularly her take-down defense.
Another indication of an edge for Thailand’s wondergirl in the upcoming finals is Ritu’s early struggle against Meng Bo’s from the quarterfinal round meeting where she was rocked a number of times, only to survive due to some bad decisions from Meng by going for submission instead of pouncing on the ground and pound.
If Stamp can land a solid strike to Phogat and jump on her for the emphatic ground and pound finish, she may just be on her way to challenge the Atomweight queen for her throne.
