Over the years, the international popularity of the National Hockey League has grown. With the Winter Olympics in Beijing on its way, it’s time to revisit some of the best Canadian NHL players of this season!

Top NHL Canadian Players Of The Season

So, if you want to play it safe or appear more knowledgeable in front of your friends, then this list will surely help you to place the right bet.

But a word of caution- the results of any match depend on the entire team and which side lady luck seems to favor- so bet wisely and safely! May the odds be in your favor!

Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche

26-year-old Halifax native Nathan MacKinnon is one of the finest in the league right now. Everyone saw that the man reeked of potential when he was selected first overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Nathan MacKinnon is one of the best players to come from the Halifax, Nova Scotia region. He is accomplished, has led Colorado with 14 points, including two goals in 12 assists in the last season, and has scored more than 35 goals and 93 points in his time at the NHL.

2. Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers

24-year-old Connor McDavid comes from one of the most populous provinces of Canada and the region that has produced the most NHL talent. The Ontario native is considered to be one of the best players in the world by several of his colleagues and fellow coaches. He is arguably the best player of the 2020-21 season and has a long way to go. McDavid was the No.1 pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft, and since then, he has won the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy, and become a three-time first-team all-star.

3. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins

Another Halifax native, 34-year-old Sidney Crosby, is an unstoppable force. He is the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL and is also said to make it to Team Canada for the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February 2022. He is one of the first hockey players to have claimed his spot so far. His Olympic debut was in Vancouver in 2010, and he brings the experience that the Canadian team will need at the games.

4. Mathew Barzal, New York Islanders

Coquitlam native 24-year-old Mathew Barzal has everything he needs to be one of the top Canadian NHL players. He has scored 220 points in 244 games since his debut at the start of the 2017-18 season. Barzal also has a career-high of 85 points in 82 games (22 goals, 63 assists). As a rookie in the NHL, he even won the Calder Trophy. Spectators have often commented that the New York Islanders are the best fit for Mathew Barzal, as he seems to benefit from the mentorship of Barry Trotz and Jim Hiller.

5.Alex Pietrangelo, Vegas Golden Knights

Any list of the greatest Canadian players in the NHL is incomplete without the mention of King City native Alex Pietrangelo. There is a significant percentage of Canadian players in the NHL, but Pietrangelo stands out. The 31-year-old is leading the top pairing of defensemen in the National Hockey League. In fact, he is often referred to as one of the best defensemen in the NHL. He had one heck of a season playing for the St.Louis Blues in the 2019-20 season, and hopefully, he will bring the same enthusiasm to Team Canada in February.

6. Brayden Point, Tampa Bay Lightning

With his tenacity on the puck, breakaway speed, and ability to draw offense, the 25-year-old Calgary native is the ignition for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The point was selected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and since then, he has come a long way. His potential as an offense man was quite evident in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Brayden Point managed to score 33 points in 23 games, including 14 goals and 19 assists, which helped Tampa Bay Lightning win the Cup. What distinguishes Brayden Point from most of the NHL players is his fluency in skating. He has become one of the most dominant forwards in NHL history in just 5 years.

7. Shea Theodore, Vegas Golden Knights

Last but not least, we have Langley native, 26-year-old Shea Theodore. Some may argue that it’s too soon to judge Theodore’s talents, but the defenseman has made it evident that he is one of the most underrated players in the NHL league. The Anaheim Ducks first picked Shea Theodore in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, but soon he found his way to his dream team, the Vegas Golden Knights. The Vegas Knights and Theodore are a complementary piece, and he is certain to learn a lot from head coach Peter DeBoer.

This was our take on the best Canadian NHL players of the season. Special mentions should go to Taylor Hill of the Buffalo Sabres, Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, Travis Zajac of the New Jersey Devils, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, and Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues.

Even though these players didn’t make the cut on the list, they are unarguably one of the top NHL Canadian players who show unreserved promise.

Fans may argue that Team Canada’s defense hasn’t been very durable on the bluelines the past few years; we are always rooting for our favorite Canadian players in NHL!
