The first stadium dedicated to women’s soccer in the United States will be built in Kansas City, Missouri, on the riverfront of the Missouri river. It will be home to the Kansas City Current, the city’s National Women’s Soccer League team that just finished its opening season of play.
The stadium’s expected cost of $70 million will be privately funded. It will seat 11,000 people when it is expected to open, around 2024. The Kansas City Current announced it will also be building a $15 million training facility in nearby Riverside, Missouri.
The investments represent a dedication within the U.S. and the Kansas City region towards women’s soccer and women’s athletics that has been growing in recent years. This could ignite further expansion of the resources devoted to women’s sports and specifically soccer.
“World-class facilities have proven to be a catalyst in transforming all professional sports,” said KC NWSL Co-Founder and Co-Owner Angie Long. “Tremendous momentum exists in women’s sports specifically, and we are so proud to play a major role in ensuring the sport and also our region benefit from the economics and growth offered by a stadium of this magnitude.”
Kansas City has been calling itself the soccer capital of the United States for a decade now and is currently seeking a bid to host matches for the 2026 World Cup. Two weeks ago the city welcomed FIFA officials to assess the city for the prospects of hosting matches in the 2026 World Cup. The FIFA representatives attended a U.S. Women’s soccer match against the Korea Republic in Kansas City.
The new stadium and training facilities will help bolster the region’s effort for World Cup games to be played in Kansas City.
The team’s new name, the Current, fitting of a team that plays in a stadium along a riverfront, was announced this week in the final match of its inaugural season.
“Immediately, our entire team had this vision of an unstoppable force churning below the surface in the heartland,” co-owner Chris Long said. “When we solidified the locations for our training facility and stadium on the Missouri River, we all knew the name had to be Kansas City Current.”
Along with the name came a new team crest symbolizing the concept for the team developed by the ownership group in the ten months since they were awarded the franchise.
“Every element is meticulously designed to tell the story of who we are, how we play and what we represent as a club,” said Co-Owner Brittany Matthews, fiancee of Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The team plans to rent out the new facility for non-NWSL events as well, being an asset for the community and for women’s soccer in the United States.
The Kansas City Current will be the only team in the NWSL to have its own facilities rather than play in the stadium of another local team. The Current will play at Children’s Mercy Park, the home of Kansas City’s MLS team Sporting KC.
On Thursday, Matthews joined Good Morning America to talk about Kansas City building the first stadium in the country dedicated to women’s sports.
“They deserve their own stadium,” Matthews said. “They need to know that this is for them.”
