Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao will return to the cage for the first time since departing the UFC in 2019.

Barao (34-9) will take on Tyson Duckworth (12-9) in a featherweight bout at Premier FC 32 on November 19, 2021. The event takes place at MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA, and can be streamed through FITE.

Barao’s last bout was in November 2019 when he faced Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC on ESPN+ 22. Barao lost unanimously, extending his losing streak to five straight, including a loss to current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.

Reaching the Pinnacle

At UFC 162, Barao defeated Eddie Wineland for the interim bantamweight championship earning a technical knockout in the opening minute of round two. He was scheduled to face Dominick Cruz for the undisputed bantamweight title, but an injury forced Cruz out of the bout. Shortly after, Barao was crowned the undisputed champion.

Barao successfully defended his title at UFC 169 against perennial contender Urijah Faber. It would be his only defense of the title as he was defeated by T.J. Dillashaw seven months later at UFC 173. After the title loss, Barao would go 2-7 in his last nine bouts and exited the UFC on a five-fight losing streak. Barao was scheduled to fight in November 2020 at Taura MMA 12. The bout was cancelled when the event was postponed indefinitely.

His opponent, Tyson Duckworth, is currently on a three-fight losing skid. He has had success fighting in his home state of Alaska under the Alaska FC banner. In 12 professional wins, Duckworth has finished his opponent eight times, five via submission. Outside of Alaska, Duckworth has yet to see a victory inside the cage.
