The Callout

Khamzat Chimaev (10-0) is calling former UFC heavyweight Daniel Cormier (22-3) out of retirement. In a Twitter post yesterday, he challenged DC to a wrestling match.

Let’s make a wrestling match brother what you think“?

Cormier responded, “In a real wrestling match? Are you crazy Khamzat? Love that you’re confident but brother this is 10-0 DC”!

DC’s Wrestling Career

Cormier wrestled in high school and college and earned the chance to compete for the US Olympic Team. He was a World Wrestling bronze medalist, a World Cup runner-up, a Pan American Games gold medalist (bronze in 2007), and a two-time Pan American champion. As a 2008 Olympic wrestling team member, Cormier had to withdraw from competition after suffering kidney failure due to excessive weight cutting.

Cormier’s UFC Career

Cormier made his UFC promotional debut against Frank Mir (19-13) on April 20, 2013, at UFC on Fox 7. He became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion in 2015, beating Anthony Johnson (23-6) for the vacant title at UFC 187. Cormier faced Stipe Miocic (20-4) for the UFC heavyweight championship on July 7, 2018, at UFC 226. He won the fight with a first-round knockout, becoming the second fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in the UFC. In November 2018, Cormier had the first defense of his heavyweight championship against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230. He beat Lewis via rear-naked choke in Round 2, becoming the first to submit “The Black Beast.”

Cormier became the first UFC fighter to win and defend both the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight belts. The double champ relinquished the light heavyweight title a day before UFC 232, focusing solely on defending the heavyweight title. At the time, he stated, “I’d rather walk away this way than have the history books say I was stripped.” Cormier announced his retirement from MMA following his trilogy bout loss to Miocic in August 2020 at UFC 252 after losing the fight by unanimous decision. Cormier now serves as a commentator for UFC pay-per-views, Fight Night cards, and hosts a few different programs on ESPN.

Chimaev’s UFC Dominance

Since beginning his UFC career in 2020, Chimaev has been an unstoppable force in the welterweight division. He has impressive wins over several UFC vets, including John Phillips (22-11), Rhys McKee (11-4-1), Gerald Meerschaert (33-14), and Jingliang Li (18-7).

Chimaev’s Wrestling

The Russian also recently beat fellow UFC fighter Jack Hermansson (22-6) in a wrestling bout in November at Bulldog Fight Night 9. The event was held at the Bananpiren in Gothenburg, Sweden. Hermansson is a UFC middleweight and began his martial arts career as a Greco-Roman wrestler at the age of 9. He won the national championship in wrestling in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Chimaev was born in Chechnya and competed in his native Russia in wrestling as a junior, winning a national championship before relocating to Sweden in 2013. Chimaev won three national wrestling championships in Sweden, with his most recent match in 2018 at 92 kg.
