After a dominant win against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Belal Muhammad set his sights on a title shot against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Should that request be denied, Muhammad has another target in mind.
Muhammad (20-3) has won six straight fights, more than enough to lay claim to a title shot, but he has recently turned his attention to undefeated welterweight Khamzat Chimaev.
Derailing The Hype Train
“It makes sense for anybody in the division,” Muhammad told MMA Junkie in regards to fighting Chimaev. “He has the most hype in the division right now. He has that (Conor) McGregor X-factor stardom right now, where the fans think he’s untouchable. The boss thinks he’s untouchable. They all think it’s just a matter of time before he becomes champion. So for me, if I beat him, I steal all of his hype, and I think it’s worth more than beating anybody ranked in the division. Beating him is probably worth more than beating Colby Covington just because of all the hype he has right now.”
Chimaev responded on Twitter by posting, “You number one bullsh*t, I need 1 minute to take your head.”
“All I need is 15 min to beat you,” Muhammad snapped back on Twitter.
Since then, both fighters have been consistently taking jabs at each other on Twitter and, needless to say, the exchanges have been entertaining.
Chimaev (10-0) has won four straight in the Octagon. His most recent victory came against Jinglian Li at UFC 267 in October. Early word was that “Borz” was looking for one more fight in 2021 and, despite actively calling out fighters on social media, nothing came to fruition.
“Nobody’s Trying to Fight Khamzat”
Dana White has recently commented that getting a fight for Chimaev has been difficult.
“Nobody wants to fight this guy,” said White. “Everybody wants to get out on social media and say this and say that and blah, blah, blah. But when it really comes down to it, nobody’s trying to fight Khamzat Chimaev.”
Neil Magny has been vocal about his interest in facing Chimaev, but it appears that Muhammad has stolen some of that thunder.
Muhammad would be a significant step up in competition for Chimaev, exactly what the UFC appears to be looking for.
Perhaps we’ll get a fight announcement in our Christmas stocking, but for now, we can enjoy the ongoing battle on social media.
