The New England Patriots fell to the Buffalo Bills 33-21 Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. As a result, the Patriots (9-6) lost the game and the division lead. They will now have to win out and hope the Bills (9-6) lose one of their final two games to win the AFC East. They finish up with home games against the Atlanta Falcons (7-8) and the New York Jets (4-11.)
Allen and McKenzie Go Off
The Patriot’s defense could not contain Josh Allen or stop Isaiah McKenzie, as Bill’s offense totaled 428 total yards. Three weeks after holding Allen to 145 yards and one touchdown, he went off and passed for 314 yards and threw three touchdown passes. He also added 64 more on the ground. McKenzie had a career-high 11 receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown. He helped fill the void of Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis, who were both out on the reserve/Covid-19 list.
Bills Defense Shines
The Bills entered the game ranked number one in the NFL in total defense, and they showed why. They made things challenging for Mac Jones on the day. For the second consecutive week, the offense started slow. After attempting only three passes in their first match-up, he finished 14 for 32 for 145 yards and one interception. Damien Harris, who missed last week’s game in Indianapolis, returned and rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns. He was the lone bright spot for the Patriot’s offense.
Jaguars Up Next
After a seven-game winning streak that propelled them to the top of the division, the Patriots have lost back-to-back games. Jones has struggled in both games throwing for two touchdowns and four interceptions. The Patriots now find themselves as the sixth seed in the AFC. Next week, they host the Jacksonville Jaguars and finish the regular season against the Miami Dolphins.
The Patriots will now get ready to take on the Jaguars. They are currently in the playoffs as the sixth seed, and if they win out, they will be. There is also a chance they could get in by splitting their final two games. The Jaguars are (2-13) and have had an interesting season. The Patriots will be heavily favored to win that game. However, the Dolphins (7-7) game could become significant and decide a playoff spot. We know the Patriots have struggled in Miami, so this game could end up deciding if they are in the postseason or not.
