Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will miss Sunday’s trip to Chelsea after returning a suspected positive Covid-19 test, the Premier League said on Saturday.

Liverpool recently welcomed back several players after positive Covid tests, but could be left depleted once more ahead of the Premier League trip to Stamford Bridge

The Reds had been without the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho in recent weeks after the first-teamers tested positive for the virus, with Van Dijk returning to action in the midweek defeat against Leicester City.

Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders will take charge at Stamford Bridge in the absence of Klopp, who is isolating after reporting mild symptoms.

“Testing of the entire first-team set-up has revealed no further positive cases within the playing squad in addition to the three confirmed by Klopp on Friday,” Liverpool said in a statement

“Three backroom staff members have returned suspected positive results, however.”

Liverpool are third in the Premier League table, one point behind Chelsea and 12 adrift of leaders Manchester City with two games in hand on Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, the manager played down suggestions Liverpool could call for a postponement of the game, which will be their last with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane before the pair fly off for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“It is not so cool at the moment,” Klopp told the press ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“I’m not able to say who [has tested positive] but it will be pretty clear on the teamsheet the day after tomorrow,” the manager added,

“Postponement? Not yet but we’ve never had this outbreak. It’s more every day another one, a few staff. It feels like a lottery.”
