Matt Chapman, the third baseman for the Oakland Athletics, might get traded this offseason as the Athletics want to cut down on payroll this offseason.

The New York Yankees would put him at shortstop though, since Gio Urshela already covers third base. Chapman has limited experience at shortstop covering it in college and a little in the Minor Leagues. Chapman would be a right handed swing and would hit plenty of homers in the hitter friendly Yankee Stadium while his defense makes him very attractive for the Bronx Bombers.

Defense

Chapman is a three time Gold Glove Award winner who led all third baseman with an Outs Above Average of 17 last season. The 28 year old had a fielding percentage of .987 which is very good and led all third baseman last season in that category. He only had 6 errors which is incredible. The three time Gold Glove Award winner had 166 putouts which is the most of his career. It would be an excellent bargain if the Yankees can scoop him in the offseason.

Right-Handed Batting

The 28 year old has a right handed swing that is suitable for Yankee Stadium due to right field only being 314 feet. Last season, his stats were .210 batting average, 111 hits, 27 home runs, and 72 runs batted in at 622 plate appearances. His OPS + was at 100 this year which stands for on-base slugging percentage. An OPS + of 100 is league average while 150 for example is 50 percent better than league average.

He finished seventh in Most Valuable Player Voting in 2018. Chapman had a OPS+ in 2018 of 137, 127 in 2019, 120 in 2020, and 100 in 2021. He had 202 strikeouts this season which is the most of his career.

Although his numbers offensively are slipping from 2018, he would still be a perfect fit for the Yankees due to his defense and power hitting.
