Two of MMA’s best female fighters out of Ireland are on a collision course and the destination is Dublin. First reported by Peter Carroll, Leah McCourt vs. Sinead Kavanagh is being targeted for a showdown at 3Arena in Dublin this February.

While both fighters having represented SBG Ireland at one time or another, McCourt and Kavanagh do not actively train together so the pairing is not as surprising as it may sound given their current standing in the Bellator MMA rankings.

A ‘Curse’ on the Rise

Leah McCourt (6-1 MMA, 5-0 Bellator MMA) looks to keep her undefeated record with Bellator intact as she works her way up the rankings. Currently sitting at #4 in the women’s featherweight rankings and #9 on the women’s P4P, McCourt could very well be one win away from a shot at the reigning featherweight champion.

Making her pro MMA debut in 2017, ‘The Curse’ came up short in her first outing under the Cage Warriors banner. Since then, McCourt has rattled off six straight victories. With Bellator, she has five straight wins including three finishes. In her most recent appearance, McCourt earned a unanimous decision victory over Jessica Borga in October.

A Comeback for ‘Ko’

Sinead Kavanagh (7-5 MMA, 4-5 Bellator MMA) won back-to-back fights to earn a shot against featherweight champion Cris Cyborg at Bellator 271 in November. Unfortunately things did not go Kavanagh’s way. Cyborg defeated ‘KO’ by KO in the very first round. Despite the loss, Kavanagh is still #5 on Bellator’s featherweight rankings, one spot behind McCourt.

Kavanagh looks to get back in the win column and earn another shot at Bellator gold. While her record may not look great on paper, Kavanagh has taken on some very tough opponents including former title challengers Arlene Blencowe and Leslie Smith

With the forward pressure and sound boxing that Kavanagh brings to the cage, she is sure to be McCourt’s toughest test to date.

Bellator 275 is currently scheduled to take place at 3Arena in Dublin on Feb. 25. Other bouts currently scheduled for the event include:

  • Kane Mousah vs. Peter Queally
  • Brian Moore vs. Jornel Lugo
  • Davy Gallon vs. Charlie Leary
  • Darragh Kelly vs. Junior Morgan
  • Danni Neilan vs. Stephanie Page
  • Brett Johns vs. Khurshed Kakhorov

Card subject to change.
