Playing a Waiting Game

The highly-anticipated showdown between Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz may have to wait a little longer than expected.

While appearing on THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas, Poirier confirmed that he was in talks for a short notice bout against Nate Diaz.

“I’m not biting my tongue. It is Nate Diaz, and just like he got on Twitter, I’m not gonna say what card, I’m not gonna say what date or whatever, but he got on Twitter talking. You know everybody’s a tough guy, and the guy really fights, and I’m a fan of him, but everybody’s a tough guy on the internet. He said something like, ‘let’s do it.’” I said, okay, I said I’ll fight you this month.”

Poirier and Diaz have been circling one another, going back to UFC 240 when a scheduled bout between the two fell apart weeks before the event. Since then, both have been verbally open to stepping into the Octagon, but it never came to fruition.

Casting Doubt

Poirier’s comments on THE FIGHT gave fans hope that we would finally see the highly anticipated bout happen. However, after Poirier’s interview went live, Nate Diaz took to Twitter to cast doubt on whether or not the bout would happen.

“I just talked to the ufc I said wassup with the Dp fight I wanna fight asap but they said dustin sucks and they don’t want it sorry Dustin you suck hope to fight asap tho let’s do this,” Diaz wrote on Twitter.

Before concluding his message, Diaz also took a shot at the current lightweight champion. “Ps Olivera, you suck too,” tweeted Diaz.

A report from MMA Fighting also claims that multiple anonymous sources with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that the fight would not be happening as of now.

At this time, it is unclear what caused the breakdown to occur. During his interview with Teddy Atlas, ‘The Diamond’ appeared genuinely excited to step in with Diaz and confirmed that he had already accepted the bout on short notice. Did Diaz not agree to fight? Is the UFC looking at other options?

Only time will tell.
