A rejuvenated Derrick Lewis sets his sights on a heavyweight clash with the former UFC champion in a bid to ‘get his fans their money back’.
Cyril Gane brutally dealt with ‘The Black Beast’ last year and claimed the interim UFC heavyweight title with an emphatic dominating performance.
The victory saw Gane earn a unification fight against former teammate and current undisputed heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
Derrick Lewis, has however overshadowed his devastating loss to Cyril Gane in his most recent win over Chris Daukaus via first-round KO victory.
Derrick Lewis vs Stipe Miocic
In his post-fight conference, Lewis claimed to have learned the hard way in what was his only defeat in his last six fights and called out Stipe Miocic in the process.
"This last fight helped me. lt was a big experience difference. I just wanted to finally go into a fight week and not put pressure on myself, and it felt great."
"I plan on doing that for the rest of my career — just go out there and have fun. I feel like I don’t have to prove anything and that’s one of the reasons why I want to fight Stipe next. I believe that would be a great matchup for the fans and for both of us. He’s more of a wrestler, and I’m more of a wrestler, too. So it would be a great, entertaining fight."-Lewis said.
UFC"s King of KO"s
Derrick Lewis presently holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history.
Having faced almost every top heavyweight, the currently ranked number four combatant relishes getting into fights as the underdog as it takes the pressure off him.
Lewis also believes it would be an ideal set-up to pay back his fans who lost money in his defeat against Cyril Gane.
"I’ve fought just about everyone in the division in the top-10. It’d be a new face, new blood, and I believe I’d be a heavy underdog in this fight. I can get my fans their money back from the Gane fight."
The negativity surrounding ‘The Black Beast’ seems to be a major morale booster and he sees the fight as a way to prove his skeptics wrong.
"I’ve got a lot of people rooting against me, a lot of family members, a lot of haters. I’ve got to use that energy to really push myself forward, so that’s what I’ve been doing."
"After that fight [with Gane], I didn’t even have to change my number because nobody was hitting me up to go hang out, or this and that. As soon as I win, everybody, and their mommy and daddy, uncles, cousins, everybody is calling me. Whenever I lose, nobody wants to talk to me, nobody wants to be around me. That’s fine with me."
Stipe"s UFC resume
Stipe Miocic, a former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, holds the record for most wins in heavyweight title fights along with the longest title defense streak in the heavyweight division.
Miocic, slightly fading away, hasn"t fought since his last title defeat to Francis Ngannou and this bout seems the best option to bring him back to the spotlight.
Who do you think would emerge as the winner? Does Stipe have what it takes to stop the in-form Lewis? Let us know!
