A grudge match between former friends turned enemies has finally been made. First announced by ESPN, ex-teammates Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington will meet in a five-round main event at UFC 272 on March 5.

Originally, Max Holloway was scheduled to face featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the card’s main event. Holloway pulled out of the fight just days after it was announced due to injury. Chan Sung Jung, better known to MMA fans as the ‘Korean Zombie’ will step in to face Volkanovski, but the fight was shifted to UFC 273 in April, leaving UFC 272 without a main event.

A Long Awaited Showdown

Jorge Masvidal (35-15-0 17-9-0 UFC) will be looking to get back in the win column after back-to-back defeats to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Masvidal’s last win came against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019 when the two fought for the ‘BMF’ title.

Masvidal was scheduled to face Leon Edwards at UFC 269 in December but was forced to pull out due to a reported rib injury.

Colby Covington (16-3-0 11-3-0 UFC) is also coming off of a loss to reigning champion Kamaru Usman. Covington earned seven straight victories on his path to a shot at UFC gold but was finished by the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ in the fifth round of their UFC 245 bout.

Covington bounced back with a lopsided win over the former champion and perpetual Jake Paul punching bag Tyron Woodley to earn another shot at Usman. Covington once again fell short, losing via unanimous decision at UFC 268.

Friends Turned Enemies

The feud between Masvidal and Covington goes back to their time together at American Top Team. Covington has claimed that jealousy over his rise up the welterweight ranks and popularity is what put him at odds with Masvidal

“He ripped off my coach, that was his coach. We were with him until his title fight. After he won the title, he owed him a certain amount of money, didn’t pay him,” said Masvidal in an interview with Dan LeBatard. “I said if you don’t pay him I’m going to f*ck you up. My coach got in between it, it doesn’t have to be like this, let it slide, since thing I ain’t talked to the dude.”

Masvidal, on the other hand, claims that Covington failed to pay one of his coaches that helped ‘Chaos’ prepare for his interim title fight against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225.

“We were [friends] until he ripped off my coach,” said Masvidal.

At UFC 272, both fighters will get the chance to settle the feud inside the Octagon. The event is scheduled to take place on March 5 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Other bouts announced for the event include:

  • Edson Barboza vs. Bryce Mitchell- featherweight bout
  • Jessica Eye vs. Manon Fiorot- women’s flyweight bout
  • Mariya Agapova vs. Maryna Moroz- women’s flyweight bout
  • Dustin Jacoby vs. Michal Oleksiejczu- light heavyweight bout
  • Tim Elliott vs. Tagir Ulanbekov- flyweight bout
  • Marina Rodriguez vs. Yan Xiaonan- strawweight bout
  • Kevin Holland vs. Alex Oliveira- welterweight bout

Card subject to change.
