Tuukka Rask is returning to the Boston Bruins for his 15th season in the NHL. One of the very best goalies in Bruins history is returning to the crease once again after signing a contract worth one million dollars for the rest of the season. After rehabbing from surgery during the offseason the return of the Bruins goaltending legend will create a tandem of three to wreak havoc for opposing team offenses.
Tuukka Rask Career Summary
Tuukka Rask’s NHL career actually began with the Bruins rival the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto drafted him 21st overall in the 2015 NHL draft and traded him away for fellow goaltender Andrew Raycroft. Raycroft struggled in his time with the Maple Leafs but the complete opposite has happened for Rask and the Bruins. In his 14 seasons as a member of the Bruins, he has played in 560 regular season games compiling 306 wins and 52 overtime losses. He has a career save percentage of .921 and a goals-against-average of 2.27. In the playoffs, Rask’s play has gotten even better as he has a .925 save percentage and 2.22 goals-against average in 104 games.
His efforts have been recognized with many accolades including being named an NHL All-Star twice, winning the Vezina Trophy for the 2013-14 season. The Vezina Trophy goes to the best goaltender during the regular season. He was also the recipient of the William M Jennings Trophy in the 2019-20 season. The William M Jennings Trophy is given to the goalies who played 25+ games for the team with the lowest goals allowed.
Best Goaltending in the League?
With Rask returning to the Bruins crease they will have a tandem of Linus Ullmark and Tuukka Rask. Free-agent signing Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman have been the Bruins" tandem so far this season. They have been very solid so far as the 23-year-old Swayman has played 16 games so far with a .918 save percentage and 2.26 goals-against average. Ullmark has also been very good as he has also played 16 games and has a 2.57 goals-against average with a .917 save percentage.
With the return of Tuukka Rask, Swayman has been reassigned to the Providence Bruins. He was reassigned as he did not have to pass through waivers to get to the AHL. If Ullmark has a decline in play or Rask has a hard time getting acclimated to the NHL play once again Swayman will be back up to the NHL once again. The duo of Ullmark and Rask should be one of the best goalie tandems in the NHL with the best third-string goalie in the league of Jeremy Swayman.
